Hi everyone
I have started this thread for my dad, hes not great with computers
About a month ago my parents bought Aspro's (paul) 1995 S6. My dad has really enjoyed driving it and has got lots of enthusiasm for it. He has been in the motortrade all his working life as a mechanic and has owned a few audi's in his time.
Now, the car needs quite a bit of attention both mechanicly and cosmeticly.
First off the engine:-
Where do i start. Well we bought with 189,000 on the clock but the engine had been replaced recently with one from a car (S4 93/94) with 89,000 on it. Great we thought, no need to worry about that.
We drove the car back from manchester to north yorkshire with no troubles at all, took it down to the garage and did some work it needed for MOT. We put it through the MOT no worries.
Dad did all sorts of service checks on it too and noticed it didnt have any antifreeze in what so ever (little worrying with the cold weather we had this winter). We put new antifreeze in it and it was used to go to wakefield that weekend.
Unfortunately it seems with putting the antifreeze in it has found all the little problems. Antifreeze is very seaching and it dug out a headgasket problem. Oh cock, what have we bought, were amongst our first thoughts! So off with the head and this is what we found:-
Metal type gasket
Cylinder Head with these markings
Judging by the date markings on the head it looks like its a 1995 one, it looks like the engine that was swapped into this car must of had a different head or complete engine as i guess it should of had 93/94 markings.
Also something else that is very odd is it has been drilled:-
Does anyone know why this might be like this?
The block and pistons
Are these markings on the pistons normal or has this had a rebore?
Sorry that was a bit of a read There is much more to come on this but for now if any of you can shed any light on what we have here that would be much appreciated.
Dad sent the head round to have it pressure tested etc this eve so hopefully we'll know more on that soon, and hopefully we can get this awsome beast back on the road :bow:

The block normally has two locating points in the corners for the gasket to sit on. I take it the drill marks in the head correspond to one of them. It's possible the head when fitted to the original 1995 block had the locating point in a slightly different place so has been drilled to be fitted to this block.
The piston marks are similar to the ones on my MB with the + sign. Standard bore is 81 so you've got nothing to worry about there.
I'd suggest measuring with a vernier caliper to confirm. |

Ok so we got the head pressure tested and its ok
Does look like its going to need quite a bit skimming off it. Whats the deal with head gaskests and how much you can take off using a standard thickness one?

Compression ratio gets reduced the more you remove |

Doesn't the compression ratio get RAISED when you skim???? |

Either way, you don't want to alter the compression ratio any more than is necessary |

Hi Jim
You can take upto 21 thou off the head ..I have had to do this and it will work no problem ..you will be using a metal head gasket to ,so all good
You will need to take out the inlet valves before it goes to machine shop as they sit proud
As Mike has said about dowel ..would check when you get the new head gasket set they are the same as i find it strange for them to do that unless that is a 7A head gasket? |

Thanks for your comments guys, really useful info there. The machine shop took 10 thou off as there was a little warpage.
This just got a whole lot more interesting tho as the block is now out and stripped due to bad water corrosion in a couple of the bores. Looks like it had been stood at some stage with water in there.
So it will be getting a rebore! |
