Ok, here i go again, picked up the new (to me) car today, after having two 80 saloons and a Coupe as project cars i have gone for something different this time....

Scouting around last thursday on Autotrader and Ebay for a replacement to the damaged Coupe i couldn't make my mind up as to what to buy, another Coupe or a saloon, so i split the difference and plumped for an 80 Avant!

Found this on ebay for silly money, was finishing at a bizzare time in the morning (2.00 am Shocked ) and had no bids, so i threw a couple of bids on and went to bed, next morning i am the owner of this......

1994 2.6 V6 80 Avant Very Happy . Its a 110KW ABC engine, Kind of a dark metallic blue/grey, paint code is LZ5U if anyone can help me out, 137K on the clock, usual fare of front electric windows and sunroof, it still has the original retractable load cover in the boot, tatty old carpet mats are fitted at the moment but this is good as the carpets are totally unmarked, and dry. Seats are blue 'Jason King' esque velour and are again unmarked and look like new. Only bad points on the inside are a usual broken throttle peddle and a holed and worn gear gaitor, oh and the sunroof seems to be jammed Rolling Eyes Few blown cluster bulbs, like i'm surprised at that but all in all very good inside.

Outside, again very good, no rot or dents, no laquer peeling anywhere, just a 4 inch 5mm scratch along the O/S rear arch, oh and the passenger door mirror is badly scuffed too, but un-broken and works fine. Add that to about an inch of dust and all is good.

Engine....sweet as a nut, sounds superb, no rattles or knocks, no smoke from the tail pipes, pulls like a train and is very smooth. Gearbox is nice and tight and the clutch appears to be fine.

According to the service book it has full Audi service history up to 108,000, it then missed a service and was done at 124K by an independant Audi specialist, so no immediate worries there.

MOT is out and i have the failure sheet... 3 tyres close or on the legal limit, both front CV gaitors are split and the rear discs are pitted. Thats it, so the 10 spokes from the Coupe will be going on as they were re-shod back at Christmas, the CV joints do not click so i will just fit a pair of boots for now and i will replace the rear discs and pads.

Not too bad overall i think, car came with a newish looking Sony Cd/Radio and also a Parrot Bluetooth car kit which seems to work fine.
Both the tailgate struts are wak and almost decapitated me earlier on, so they will need attention, will Coupe ones fit? The boot needs a damn good valet but that is the only grubby area.
Four OZ 15" alloys are fitted but they will come off as i do like the OE 10 spokes that currently reside on the Coop.

Have a look then why don't you......

Silver coach lines will be coming off asap!!!

3 spoke wheel will be going in from the Coop, gear gaitor and the aux dials and the console, ashamed as i am to say it they will be purely for looks only to start with Embarassed New set of mats and a clean up, roberts your aunties live in lover.

S2 front bumper on here too Cool

Only complaint is the lack of roof rails, i do like them and would seriously consider fitting a pair if anyone has any ideas on how to go about them, just doesn't look right without them.

See how long this one lasts Rolling Eyes

Si. Wink

Couldn't agree more, top of the unwanted list was Red and Black!!!!

Coop was red, saloon was black, both faded in the blink of an eye!!!

Looking forward to doing this one, really impressed with the way it drives, that V6 is so silky and does put a smirk on my face. Went to pick it up this morning with a Discovery 3 and trailer, ended up driving it home and Disco followed up the rear, became addicted to that V6 hum Very Happy

Cushty! Hey, these 80 2.6 Avants are as common as muck Rolling Eyes Laughing I bet you wish yours had quattro and roof rails tho...... Wink

So, come on, spill the beans - how much sausage 'n' mash did yer get yer jam jar for?

I do like the 2.6 V6 lump (probably just as well). Perhaps a service would be beneficial, even just for your peace of mind? Oil and filter change never goes amiss...

Oh, LZ5U is Indigo Pearl - http://www.uniquecarsandparts.com.au/colour_codes_volkswagen_audi.htm

Keep us posted with updates on yours too!

Roof rails Evil or Very Mad Want roof rails Evil or Very Mad

Agree with the oil and filter change Al, oil looks clean enough but always best to know its been done.

Indigo Pearl, is it a rare colour then? I imagine after a good polish it will look rather nice, i must admit i do like it. Thanks for looking that up pal.

Cost, oh why so vulger over the monetry value... Cool

Now that's a Billy Bargain! Wink

Hopefully you can't go wrong with that, especially as you have the MoT failure sheet so know what needs doing. Your 10-spokes will look better than the current wheels anyway, and with new tyres will solve three MoT failures in one go Very Happy

I thought so pal, no signs of leakage on the shockers either, will swap the wheels over and take it in for test and see what they say.

Will probably try and move on the OZ wheels too, never know may get something back off them too.

Sure was cheap though. Laughing

Thats an absoulute bargain, very nice lookin car, especially for the money. Im probably wrong on this but is it the same colour as this one -

LINK

I love the colour of this one.

With reguards the sunroof it could be a motor or relay problem or it may be a cable problem. The cables on my coupe were siezed up solid when i got it so i changed the sunroof casset (quite a job!). Still i think you need all this out to fit roof bars, so you could get the lot from a scrap car all at once and fit it all together, every cloud has a silver lining Laughing

Nice car mate, lookin forward to seeing it progress!

Jim

Most of the loom for the extra guages was there in my 90, I think I just needed the 2 pin oil pressure sender to get them all working, the volt guage just plugged right in and I think the oil temp did as well.

Oh well fingers crossed then!!! Would be nice for them to work as i do prefer function over form, but i know a few guys on here have hit a few stumbling blocks with them, will take a look though

Thanks Andy.

Jamo on s2 forum's avant is same colour as yours, there is a thread saying who own's/had what colour car and listing the colours and paint codes there.

I have a lot of avant spares if your after anything from my ex girlfriends now dead avant, including a pair of rear tailgate struts Laughing

plus.... I think I have a indigo blue s2 front bumper, infact almost 100% sure of it Razz

Fired the beastie up today, needed to move it as the Coupe should be leaving me tomorrow, one thing i did notice was a sort of 'groan' type noise when the steering was span lock to lock, first time i have heard it, it was inside a very quiet workshop but nevertheless, still heard it, as i only have one hand at the mo i didn't delve any further but has anyone come across anything like this before? Got the good lady to open the PAS resovoir and that seemed fine, no burning smell or anything else untowards, top mounts maybe? Wouldn't mind if it is as the front shocks will be getting replaced at some stage for the MOT.

Odd one......

Also, good lady again, bless her, changed the sunroof motor for me, still didn't work though, motor spins freely but the roof don't wanna know! Seems to be jammed solid, obviously something more sinister... Mad

In for MOT today, i switched the wheels and tyres from the Coupe as the the present ones were either bald or perished, the discs were changed last week so off it went, i knew from the previous failure sheet what to expect so rather than guess if anything else was suspect i shoved it in and waited!!

So, another failure sheet....

1. Excessive movement on both front struts (top mounts)
2. Both CV gaiters are split (aware of those from the previous faliure)
3. Nearside front strut leaking (as above)
4. Rear brakelight bulb
5. Number plate light bulb

And two adviseries......

1. Emissions slightly unstable but passable (poss cat or lambda)
2. Offside front strut (nowt wrong with it but advised to fit a new pair because of the above)

So, all in all not too bad, got 10 days to get it sorted and i will get a free re-test, any longer then a full fee full test will apply.

Quite chuffed with that, considering what the car cost me, so fingers crossed we should be back to a two car family by the end of the week.

Si. Wink

12 months ticket now in hand!!! cheers

New CV gaiters and strut top mounts aquired and fitted last week, found a pair of used struts on the shelf at my local breakers so popped them on and back it went, all good Very Happy

6 months tax now on too, so time for a shakedown, weather permitting tomorrow will see a damn good cleaning session and then will see what to do next.

Changed the oil and filter too, genuine filters used and a good dollop of Quantam oil, air filter also replaced. Probably have a look at the cambelt soon, just as a precaution, car came with full Audi history but no receipts, so may change it for peace of mind if nowt else, once cleaned will dig the camera out.
