My coupe is now running like a swiss watch which is more than can be said for the fuel consumption Rolling Eyes
I have no misfires and from what I can tell she's not running too rich yet after completing just 230 miles my petrol light has come on !

This averages out at about 28 mpg, mostly motorway with a few (ahem) three figure blasts !

So what do you think ? Is this about right ?
Seems like I've got the costs of running a V8 round town Shock

Hi Gripper....long time...

Have you checked the lambada probe?

from what i remember, the 2.8 12v at best would only return 32mpg?

Lambada probe... Hmmm ! Hadn't thought of that !
I do not have vag-com so I'm going to book it into supertune by me to see if it makes any difference.
But not before Ive given my K&N a clean and put some new plugs in !

you sure about that average ?

230 miles to a tank doesn't equal 28mpg

I wouldn't complain if you're getting 28

Its not 100% accurate Mike but this is how I got to it
£1.35 per litre = £6.075 per gallon
£50 in tank = 8.33 gallons
230 miles ~ 8.33 = 27.6 mpg

That doesn't sound too bad but around town £20 goes nowhere Shock

@ Scotty, Cheers for that I'll have a read but if those figures are not far off then maybe all she needs is a little tune up ?

ah not a full tank - the only real way to calculate is fill up till the pump cuts, do your miles and then refill again.

You can calculate from what ii cost to refill and how many miles you did

cant say i've ever driven my 20v coupe sensibly so i have no idea what mpg i would get out of it. I did manage 180 out of half a tank once, but that was cruising on the motorway from Rugby to Worksop then over to Warrington. Thats the only time ive ever kept my right foot under control.. Laughing

Do as Mike says to get an accurate figure.

That sounds about right though. You can get it up a bit more sitting at about 55mph driving gently.

Not sure if this helps but I average 30mpg over a whole tank 400 - 450 miles per tank (depends how brave I'm feeling) but I drive it like a fanny because it's my only form of transport at the moment! Usually its 23 - 27mpg. (all based on filling tank to top every refill)

It's a 10v 2.3 in an Audi 90 btw (with 3spd auto!)

audi manual states 23mpg urban for the 101kw engine a80 and 66 litre tank on the 80 saloon, dont know if same size tank on the coupe, 4.5 litres to a gallon, 66l = 14.5 g, 23x14.5=333.5miles to a full tank urban,

Coupe gets a 70 litre tank which is 15 gallons. you should see a typical range of 400+ miles quite easily

As a comparison, my 90q 20v sport only takes about 60-64 litres when I fill it, but I typically get 410-430 miles but can stretch it to 480 miles if I drive like an old woman.

bungle, i cant see audi under selling the mpg on there cars, as it says 23mpg urban you should have to drive very carefully to better it, if the coupe has a 70 litre tank then 370 miles to a tank urban driving sounds right to me, if you are motorway driving at 60mph then i would get it looked at. as gripper says "if it ain't broke dont't try to fix it"

Hi Gripper, I've got VAG-Com here but I'm not sure if it would work in the coupe, do you know which type you need?

The one I've got is a HEX-Key, not the CAN for anyone more knowledgeable!

The S4 is great thanks! I've an average MPG of 22 though, it can do about 30-35 on the motorway which isn't bad, or around 350 miles to a full tank.

I didn't expect yours to be CAN based as that didn't come in until about 2001, however I know that some of the older cars needed an adapter to work with VAG-Com.

Have a look here and let me know. http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/interfaces.html#2x2

As Merton says above, I think the 2+2 adapter will be required for it to work. Will have to see where to get one!

My 80 tends to do about 25mpg average, that is probably mostly town driving and quite a few short trips with the odd longer run. The best I have got from a tank is 32mpg and it averaged about 30mpg on a 3500 mile trip around Europe. My cabriolet has never achieved more than 25mpg and is currently averaging 19.5 but that is using it only for commuting, it is because of that I have stopped using it daily, it is just stupid to be spending £90 on petrol every 3 weeks just to get to work. I'm now using my MGB and it feels like I've switched to a 1.5l diesel! £60 every 4 weeks is a big improvement.

And heres me thinking the 'E' in 2.8E stood for economy Laughing

Got caught up in some stupid queuing/impulsive buying at the pumps today !
I only put £50 in and looked like a stockpiler Rolling Eyes
How do I tell them that's only a few days worth and "I'll be back" Shocked

The 'E' means injection in German. I don't think they could get away calling it an economy model!

It's lucky I filled up on Wednesday when there wasn't a queue, as otherwise I would have 3 cars with no petrol, now I only have 2!

Gas mileage wars are heating up between California and Detroit as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) held public hearings on the possibility of California imposing its own limits on Fuel-Economy Standards
