Hey lads, im thinking of buying 95 96 coupe and was just wondering which engine was the best one to go for, the s2 and v6 is out, so its a 16v or an 8v, isnt there several 16v engines in this model? Im not after big performance, just reliability and economy, any help/advice would be great
Cheers |

8v will give good mpg, lower insurance and cheaper parts
16v should give between 35 and 40mpg if driven sensibly...but with 16v to play with wouldnt bet on driving it sensibly. |

No not rare, 16v harder to find.
8v felt by some to be tad underpowered, bit my 1.8 80q can hold its own and does 40+ mpg on daily motorway commute.
plenty of 8v on ebay. |

The 16v stopped in 1995 so by the end of production there were only two engine options. 2.0 and 2.6
The 2.0e is only 115hp in quite a heavy car. Sports car it is not |

i purchesed an 96 8v last week and on a hole as said its a heavy car but its ok on the motorway powerwise . personally to make it very enjoyable as a sports car i would say u wont something above 200bhp
as long as ur not expecting a rocket then i would recomend the 8v |

Ive a 95/96 coupe.Its the 16v ace type engine.
Cant fault it really good power and resonable mpg.
Dont think you can get a late coupe that isnt a 16 valver. |

Any pics? im new to audis, ive a 95 tdi avant at the minute, ive had loads of corrados, vr6, g60 , 16v, and an 8v, the corrado 8v is a very underated car, it looks the same as the other models, 40mpg is easy to achieve and its plenty nippy in my opinion, its also 115bhp so im assuming the audi coupe 8v is similar and this is why id like one, i also like the low down torque of the 8v as the 16v needs to be in high revs |

8v will leave you wanting more power, but they aren't too bad if you're not just looking at performance. As said above, they're your cheapest option and are really strong engines. You can always drive it hard and if it ever does go bang, a replacement is peanuts to buy!! |

I love my 8v coupe.
Around town there's certainly enough low down torque to get it shifting, but it does run out of puff higher up the rev range.
MPG is good if you take it easy. |

I must say i do love my 16v (ACE engine).Don't get me wrong, its not a F1 car,but it does pull very well through the gears,is great on the motorway and also goes well when booted, and as said above, driven 'normally' (as mine is most of the time) you'll get great mpg. |

as jamiecoysh said above... 2.3 20v all the way
Racked up 80k in three years for work (mileage paid for!) and loved every minute. Now sitting 190k. Engine still tight as ever and sounds great. Suspension a bit squishy though |
