When I took the snubber mount cup bracket off the body for a look, you can see it is an improvment over the 90 one, however there is still an airgap between the bush and the bracket. I was thinking of adapting a bracket (read welding in the right diameter pipe) so it was a tight fit on the rubber bush and then no slop at all once bolted down, does anybody see any issues with this have any opnions?

The sportier cars have a snugger fitting snub mount and bracket. Putting a sleeve of steel pipe into the bracket is something I had considered but a problem arises because the bracket is cone shaped.

In my opinion on that engine you would see such a greater improvement of power from ditching the complete inlet system in favour of ITBs and a megasquirt system than anything you will ever do with the exhaust.

It's the inlet side that is the achilles heel there.

Jim-Trying to avoid melting the tps?

Oliver-probably right but thats expensive, this kind cheap fettling is affordable and should hopefully still give reasonable gains.

The 16v golf gti guys seem to get ok results for port/polish on TB, IM, head, EM, modify airbox/intake, de cat, KR cam and chip if you want, that can all be done cheap (except the chip if its a dyno one) if you have the time/skills.

Megasquirt is expensieve (I know its cheap for SEM buts its still pricey to me), it needs to be mapped etc.

Thanks for the advice oliver and you are probably right but as andy says it is an expensive way to go and time consumming.

I am young (ish) and am about to go to uni so dont have alot of money. I have good mechnical skills and enjoy playing to learn new skills and if there is a bit of gain to be had along the way then im in Twisted Evil Laughing

hi Pete

Car I got the bootlind from is in the yard in high bonnybridge, when I was there car was intact and appeared good (only thing wrong when I left it was no boot and two wholes in the windscreen from getting the car lifted down.

Dont know if I am putting the badges back on, it looks kind of clean as is and I like not drawing attention to my car. (ie every ned loves 16v badges-must be puir rapid)

Little bit of wheel work.

Started like this

A couple of coats of nitromors and a good brushing gave this

The lip has cleaned up pretty good, there are some spots that will need sanding/polishing. The paint left on the spokes is a sort of primer grey and the nitromors doesnt have much effect on it, is it factory paint/primer?

At the moment thinking polished lip, spray spokes/center silver and polish the fake locknut, any thoughts?

I bought some hi-gloss lacquer that can be applied direct on to polished alloy surfaces. If it stays warm this weekend I'll tell you how it looks Wink

Thanks Dutchman

Been working a lot so not much progress.

Took a trip to Noels and got some parts to add to my collection of bits to be fitted Laughing

Started stripping a spare 16v head, realised I hadn't taken the cam gear off once all the cam caps were off Rolling Eyes so exhaust cam caps back on and made this to hold the gear.

Kinda ghetto but it works and its the first tool I made with a welder so well proud Very Happy

So now

Also cleaned up the cam cover in preparation for painting

Got a q for some guys, what kind of valve spring compressor are you using? I have and old one a neighbour gave me

But it doesnt seem to reach into the valve retainer very well, any pointers?

Andy

Failed Mot today on

All emissions tests
Both front cv joints gaitors split (checked a week ago Evil or Very Mad)
N/S fr and rr wheel bearings rough
N/S rr brake calliper(s) leaking

Got new plugs, new air filter and a new cat en route and will see if that will get the emissions sorted. Got cv boots so that should be straightforward.

Anybody know what kind of 02 sensor a 16v has?

Going to have a look at the calliper soon and see whats leaking.

Wheel bearings, never done one so qwick fit want £360 to do both or £40 to just press the bearings in if I take in the struts, can this job be done with a hammer/drifts/sockets/old races or is a press needed?

On the good news

you can definately diy it, but if you take the hubs off just about any garage or even engineering place should do it cheaper than quickfit, or even just walk into the workshop and ask 1 of the lads if they will press them out/in for you lol £40 for 5 mins work seems excessive to me
