I wonder if mine is also dropped 60mm then, same springs as Sooty - as this (sorry for the old crappy pic) is with slightly lower profile tyres (205/55/15) tyres on the front to avoid rubbage... seemed like a good idea at the time

got me thinking about more lowering now lol, you all running standard shocks?? i know many cars have issues with lowering on standard shocks wears them out quickly, this happen to vag shocks too??
on another note, managed to get my turbo off today and dropping it off to be reconditioned, should be available to pick up monday afternoon
In the mean time, on sat i'm off to wales to pick up all the sus/fuel tank and exhaust off an s2avant for my quattro conversion

standard shocks shouldn't really be a problem, however if you have shocks that have a stroke movement longer than the length of the spring, the spring can become unseated on big bumps. However, if the damping is good, you'd have to be airborne for a good long time for this to happen |

oh, and when I fitted mine it was a full adjustable Spax kit, springs and adjustable shocks altogether. However, the front shocks have now been replaced with Boge Turbos, as the Spax ones shattered.. |

shattered? how did that happen did they explode inside the tube or interally of the unit itself? |

internally - tore the locking ring off the top of the strut as it had obviously bottomed out and something had to give.... When I took the shock out, there was no damping left at all, just lots of bit of rubber and metal inside the strut and the piston was free to move up and down as it pleased. Only done about 15k miles

Proven Products may do a system 2 kit for your car- it's on my 90.
I think, though, that one shock is on its way out (I've had them a good few years, on 2 cars)- one "locks up" at times. On 16 inch rims with 45 profile tyres, it's ok. On 17 inch rims with 40 profile tyres, it can be a pain....
With lowering, typically if 40mm or less, you should be ok with standard shocks. Any more than 40mm and ideally you need shorter shocks to line it all up and avoid any "issues" |

Hi Anton,
(Steve the guy that sold Anton this lovely project if you don't know me!)
Glad to see some love being given to my old Dagdag.
I had a Jamex -60mm lowering kit on my type 89 '80 Sport Edition and even running 17" wheels found it firm but comfortable. I am not sure if they do a B4 kit, but something to consider....
Cheers,
Steve. |

i have the system 2 kit on my coupe with 17's on 45 profile rubber. it is quite firm but it does feel a lot more stable and i'm happy with the result.
Gonna need poly bushes soon though i think!
The system 2 kit is quite reasonable price wise too. |

well tbh now i've calmed down and had a think about it, it may not be quite as serious as i thought.....basically when i went to start the car after fitting the new turbo i started, but only just..very rough and was shaking like mad. so i thought right, hydrolock...should have taken the glow plugs out, i've bent a rod great......this was couled with a HUGE amount of smoke.
After a couple more attempts at starting it stopped smoking and then refused to even hint at starting, like a disconnected coil on a petrol.....
now i've had a think and a bit of a guess i can only thing the rough running was due to no fuel being injected and a bit of oil and/or gunk from intake manifold has gone into the bores and was burned as fuel which would make sense of the rough running and smoke and after a while it was burned off yet there is still no fuel.
This makes more sence than a bent rod only because there is no smoke at all out of the exhaust now....and i dont see how there can be fuel and no smoke...bent rod or not....
away from the car till thursday but will have a look at it then..think a compression test is the first port of call....that will tell me straight off if it needs a new one or not.

So i decided to have a look under the bonet yesterday to see if i'd made any silly mistakes with unplugging something ect. after some thinking i figured it had to be no fuel as when it turns over there was no smoke out the exhaust at all and i could really smell any fuel.
a friend of mine was down there too and suggested that it wasnt my turbo that failed at all and that it was timing, i was very sure this wasnt the case so went to check the timing to show him when i saw somehting......
the bolt holding the pulley onto the fuel pump was on its last couple of threads and was about to fall off.....and the pulley was only just holding onto the edge of the belt!!!!! obviously it had slipped off the woodruff key and the pump wasnt turning. checked it out and the key looks ok, starts and runs fine now...much smoother than before
but how lucky was i that the key didnt snap! or what if the belt had slipped off?!?!! Also VERY strange that both problems seem to have happened at basically the same time......
either way, just happy that the car is back on the road
