My daily driver 1996 1.6 A4 Avant is not well. It's always used a bit of water - about a litre every month or so - but recently it's started to drink it more heavily and there's a horrible cream/brown mayo on the oil filler cap. It's also running erratically, sometimes the revs bounce from 500 - 1200 at idle, sometimes it feels like it's running rich.
Is there anyway of telling if it's the gasket or something more serious like a crack in the head/block without actually taking the thing to bits?

try the oil cooler before you go to expence of the head gasket
i had it on a 80 all symptoms of the head.
but was very simple to change take oil filter off then water pipes and unscrew the cooler.
