I used forte diesel treatment in the past on a 90 hp passat tdi, it did not cause any problems and did get me through the emissions test (though I think the real issue was a MAF sensor)
Best advice is probably to remove the inlet manifold and manually scrape the carbon build up out of it. The reason it accumulates is the EGR system - exhaust gas recirculation, which as the name suggests drops soot and fumes into the inlet which is coated with oil deposits from the turbo. Best to disable the egr system with a blanking plate when you are done.
At 150k it made a noticable difference to my passat at the time.

Hey Scotty
Thanks for the tips, i have been thinking about removing the egr valve and putting a blanking plate in, but i think a friends has done that on his audi and his is quite louder than mine, also im trying to get the car as economical as i can and i think i may loose a few mpg's if i do that? would you agree?
thanks

If anything your car will be more fuel efficiant blocking off the egr!

have you blocked off your egr valve and found that to be the case, if so i might just give it try, no harm i suppose, if it dosent work out i can always attach the egr back! but does the engine get any louder?

Have done on my 80 tdi a few years back, a golf and a passat, did notice an all round improvement, but then i took my inlet manifold of and cleaned them out too. No difference in noise that i noticed, perhaps your friend has not sealed his up correctly and is getting blow by?

Although forte are generally recommended as top dog.
however if something is wrong somewhere something is wrong and you are just fudging it through MOT etc . although thats not too bad I got away with that for past 5 year just dont be a dick when it comes to the time.
To be honest no additive is never going to compete with a dismatle and scrape down clean replace etc. it just comes down to costs versus how much you want to keep it, which i think is 100% 90's audi right now. scrap value is quite good so its best to scrap, but theres no way id want to scrap mine right now it' so unique, I pay in maintinence costs, but what would a newer so reliable car cost me..???? i might be wrong I might be right, what I know is I love my car and so did it's previous owner.

When I use Forte diesel treatment, I place straight into the fuel filter and drive the car hard in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears. It'll smoke like an E-Class frigate for 10 minutes, but will eventually clear. Renew fuel filter and top up with fresh diesel before starting. If close to timing belt renewel - then the above procedure is not recommended.

Power steering fluid/ATF is one of the most effective cleaners you can use on a diesel engine. Half fill your fuel filter with it the next time you change it, it'll do a far better job of cleaning your injectors than Forte, Redex, Millers or anything else.
Note: DO NOT USE ON A PD ENGINED TDI.

Have to admit that generally I don't clean the injectors. The diesel comes out at such high pressure the spray hole is always as clean as a whistle. The coke round the edges has no real effect.

Best have a look at the photo on this TDI head over in the project section.
The gunk in the inlet is unbelievable.
