I am just trying to replace my engine temperature sensor as I have the wrong one fitted at the moment. It's one for an A3...
Any pic's for reference on your temperature gauge would be extremely helpful as between Audi and myself we are scratching our heads as to which one is should be.
I have a 2000 V Audi 80 Cabriolet 1.8 20v with an ADR engine.
The problem I seem to have is that I have only TWO wires coming from the loom and the options with Audi are either 3 or 4 pin Biue, green or grey...
I have tried a green 4 pin with a square cap with no response...
Help me its driving me crazy when things don't work as they should...

Yeah we have an audi cabriolet 1999/2000 T Reg 1.8L 20V with its own problems, not sure of date of manufacture as no log book yet..
I am going to investigate my temp switch at the back of the head so I might be able to come back with colour.
The problem with ours is that it appears to linger on the revs if you drive around 3000rpm then its so bad you have to wait a second before changing gear. Another question if you drive at 70mph are you just about on the 3000rpm mark and does it feel like you need to goto 6th or 7th gear ? does it drive like a car with only 4 gears ?
Do you have this ? is it normal ? anyone know of a fix ? I was thinking maybe a problem due to temp sender but if you dont experience this issue then perhaps i dont need to change ours, also the guage just seems to move everywhere like a bad earth.
Currently replaced coil pack, maf, cleaned throttle body and had vagcom throttle body adaptation completed without errors.
Any answers, comments more than welcome..

No my car runs very smoothly indeed and is a manual box with no gear change problems.
What fuel are you using? Have you tried Shell V Power?
My TT would do this until they changed the O2 sensor and MAF.
If your fuel gauge and temp gauges do not work at all then you'll need to check out your voltage stabiliser (details above)
My old Audi A3 would hesitate after I changed the battery but would clear itself after a while which indicated that I should have put it on a charger to hold the memory maybe since you changed all the parts maybe your car needs re-setting via diagnostics?
Did you lose the use of the power windows?
What does the diagnostics say?
At the moment I just the few niggles with the temp gauge and fuel gauges not working correctly and the issue with finding the correct temp sensor and my brakes (dreadful brakes!!!)
When you check your temp sensor can you also check which engine you have (at front of engine under a small rubber cover).
Plus can you see how many wires you have going to your temp sensor.
Many thanks in advance!
Mine as an ADR engine.

It should be smooth.
But you have changed over alot the main stuff for the smooth running of the car etc
Who recommended the throttle body adaptation? Audi by any chance?
They recommended this for my TT but it had nothing to do with it, just fishing for more work/money! They also said I needed to replace my airbag system!!! Nothing wrong with that either - I only go to Audi for genuine parts and I am lucky to have a very knowledgable parts guy who is very helpful unlike most of the service guys...
FInd an Audi specialist in your area someone with good honest knowledge - where in the UK are you?
I remember when I first drove it I was very impressed with how quiet it was compared to my other convertibles inc the TT Roadster although definately not as fast!
Have you had diagnostics done after all the jobs were completed??? With no error codes?
Another idea is to post your problems on a new topic and get someone to respond with some other ideas...
It wouldn't be fun if it worked all the time

Looking forward to the pics and determining what colour and shape it is!
If easier my I can supply an email for you to send the pics.

Hi guys,
I had1.8 20v cab with the adr engine. Metro you're right there are 2 senders at the back of the head that go into an ally housing if i remember correctly - i think one is for the actual temp gauge and one tells the ecu the engine temp. I can't be sure but i think its the black 2 wire sender that does the gauge - easy way to tell is to unplug the wires from one sender and see if the temp gauge still registers if not then you know that that is the one for the gauge. As for the gauge itself flutuating all over the place its a common fault on the instrument pod itself - do a search on the 80 coupe forum and i think you'll find a good post with pics on how to fix the problem.
As for the car holding the revs slightly between gear changes - i had this and it was a worn throtle cable where the inner was hanging up on the outer - try lubricating the cable inner and make sure the the throttle linkage moves and returns freely. Good luck.
Cheers
Andy
