hi all,
got a problem with my fuel/temp gauge. the car has been parked up for a week got in it today and the gauges are not working. they are just sitting on zero as the ign is not on. i've scaned the forum and it looks like it could be a regulator problem. i think i identified the reg on the back of the dash, is there anyway to test it and is it available from main dealers??
of course if it could be something else please let me know. (i've checked all fuse's all ok) your help would be much appricated.

it cost nothing, as my bro-in-law works in a scrappy. he got it out of a mk2 golf gti, same part number.
i did ring my local dealer and he said about £10.00 but he thought it might have to come from germany, hence i didn't want to wait.

mark.

i identified the reg by the previous posts on this site. you have to take the clocks out by removing the steering column cowling and 2 screws at the bottom of the clocks. remove the unit and unplug the connectors, turn it around and on the left hand side there should be the reg. it looks like a micro chip with 3 legs coming out of it, just 1 screw and the legs slide out of thier holders. job done!!
hope this helps

mark

You can check if the regulator is faulty or not with a voltmeter. The TCA700Y is a 10V regulator. Looking from the top the pins are out, gnd, in.

So between the middle leg and rightmost pin should be about 12V (battery voltage), and between ground and leftmost pin should be 10V.

The regulator seems to have made my fuel gage a little more stable, I put the movement down to my driving as it would shift from half to three quarter full whilst driving along but now it's steady, The problem with the temp gage has been strange works one day not the next, I went to local Audi dealers who had a look they seem to think it's the wires behind the dash and want £100 labour to have a look, they seem to dismiss a fault with the temp sender but I think it would be wise to repolace anyway, Parts dept ask if I require a white or blue sender?? what i believe is the sender on my car has no colour?

Have the same sort of problem with my fuel gauge, excessive movement when driving, which i assumed was normal. The temp gauge is very erratic too, sometimes working, sometimes not, so i assume from your problem that the reg. on mine is u/s too.
Have taken the underpanel off in the drivers footwell, and made sure all the plugs were connected onto the back of the instrument panel properly, the temp gauge worked for 2 days then packed up again. Dunno if this means a bad connection or if i disturbed the regulator in some way.
I'll try replacing 'cos it aint gonna cost an arm and a leg, see if that fixes it. Will let you know.

Hi,
The 3 legs of the reg sit in little clips, these arn't the best, and the legs can become loose, so it goes intermitant. To check and cure this, take out instrument panel and use a small screwdriver or similar to push down the clips onto the legs GENTLY. Or if you're feeling a bit more adventurous you can use a blob of solder on each leg.

Cheers,
Si

Temp gauge could be the sender unit in the engine. I had erratic problem with my CQ20V. Gauge worked sometimes and not others. Changed the sender and all was well again
