Hi all, okay here we go. I have just bought my first Audi, she's a 1990 Audi 80 Sport 16v (2.0l).
Bit peeved that it is not the quattro as adverised but she's in good nick so I can live with that. However, I have a few issues I need help with:
1. Starting is VERY rough when cold and misfires/stalls unless you pump the gas pedal. Once warmed up she runs fine but cold starting is a pain - any ideas of a possible cause/repair greatly appreciated.
2. Fuel pump really buzzing
3. Wierd whisling noise (intermittently) from outside the vehicle.
4. Fan belt, anyone know of a reliable parts supplier here in the deep and woolly west country? I have tried searching on line but can't seem to find a fan belt anywhere. I am assuming that it is the fan belt judging by the squealing when accelerating.
I know, a lot to be read through but I am a fairly inept mechanic living in an area with little access to affordable garages (average £55/hr just to look at it!) so I shall have to try and do it myself.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Wink

hi and welcome. you should have two drive belts on your car , one for the power steering and water pump, and one for the alternator. the alternator belt should be a v-belt 9.5mm x 910mm and the power steering pump has a v-belt 9.5mm x 875mm, this is what the audi parts catalogue shows, it could also be timing belt related and you will have to try and find what is making the noise for sure, but any motor spares place should have these if not eurocarparts online should have them listed and post is free or phone them and they should help you. i think there is a cold start valve on 16v and maybe that could be a good place to start to look for your cold start problems. has the car been serviced regularly? maybe searching on here for 6a cold start problems will help you. good luck.

judging by the paperwork, servicing has been very regular with the last service about 2000 miles ago. I've seen somewhere on here about a temp sensor for the ecu but I havent located one, I shall root about for details on that. As far as the belt is the one at the lower front end of the engine so I will get the details off it and check out those outlets you mentiojed. Cheers

more than likely to be poor injector seals or leaking injectors if rough starting, to rule out the cold start valve simply disconect its wiring connector and see if the starting is worse than what it already is
buzzing fuel pump is not a sign of failure, most external pumps are loud
does the car run ok once started and ran?
i got my fan belt from halfords down in torquay for £1.89 as my gf has a trade card i got the power steering belt aswell as you have to remove that belt before removing the fan belt

The fuel pump on my 90 has had a whine since I got it around 4 years ago, never got any worse or given any problems so hopefully yours will be the same!

My 2.0 16v doesn't like cold starts either, it has the same symptoms as yours. I've put it down to either the Idle Air Control valve or the ECU Coolant temperature sensor. I'll get back to you if I cure it.
