anyone had any expereince of their module being repaired, mines gone south it's not the pump but the electroics on the side.

Hi,
I had this problem on my '98 2.8 A6, a few years back.
There is a chap, who advertised on e-bay at the time, who repairs it for around £180-£200.
Basically, you remove it (which may necessitate removal of the n/s inner plastic wing, and washer bottle) and send it off to him.
You can still drive the vehicle with it removed, as you are only removing the electrical part of the ABS, but you will have the ABS light on.
Have you carried out a google search for ABS repairs?
From memory, this chap was in the north of England???????

This could be an interesting thread. I was always under the impression that the controller for the ABS could only be used on the car that it has been plugged into eg 1 car.
What do they do when repairing the controller?
Reason for asking is the cost of a new controller is well bl00dy expensive eg the price of a injection pump, and we all know how much they cost$$$$.
please post your thought and experiences!

Yes the controller is very specific by part no, the basic part usually ends in 111 then letters after, depending on whether the car has edl, esp is auto or manual quattro or non quattro they variances are therefore massive.
If you got a controller or a whole pump with the exact same part no then it would be plug and play, the chances of that are slim.
Before i sent it off i was brave enough to open the controller up, by means of cutting the top section off to reveal the electronics, with a view to soldering the defective joint.
what you are faced with is some tiny like hair thickness gold wires that go from the main board to a row of gold terminals, imposible to solder as normal iron is way too hot.
the problem lies with main connection from the board to the row of gold terminals, there are 2 tiny wires that run from the board to the terminals i believe these are made of aluminium, what happens is on or both these terminals over time breaks causing the loss of communication between the controller and the dash panel and then causing other fault codes like sensors etc.
the fix is to re solder this main joint, i tried it and failed it's too small, and you need a magnifying glass to really see the problem, the board is just as small as something found in a mobile phone.
Inherent design fault on bosch's part i would say and really crap design.
For the money it's not worth touching yourself. Hope this helps others undertsand the problem and don't be fobbed off by audi saying it's a whole new pump or a new controller.

As a side note maybe the moderators of the site ahould sticky this or put it somewhere where most audi owners of all models can see it, this problems afflicts most models from 1997 through to around 2004/05, it's not just audi either the basic bosch 5.3 system is in use on a lot of brands too.

I looked at that site too, however the pictures are blown up somewhat for ease of viewing, making the wires look much bigger than they actually are, i am not saying you wouldn't be able to repair it yourself it's just so small and the slightest slip would mean breaking one of the gold wires.
I also found removal of the sticky slime on top of everything very difficult without touching something you don't want to. Yes i thought about using bba reman as well no reason why i chose the other guys just did.

Just as an extra note, I sell Audi parts for a living and have been getting enquiries lately for newer shape 4F A6 model ABS pumps too, they are £1084 + VAT from Audi, I'm sending one to the company mentioned above next week to see if they can do anything about it.
8P A3s and Golf V are also suffering too !

What i find odd is i have owned many older audi's typ 85 q, typ 89 q, 100's, urs4/6 non of them ever had a problem with pump or controller.

One trick that could well work is to heat a small (watchmakers type) screwdriver with the soldering iron and not the contact directly.
Use the screwdriver instead of the soldering iron on the contacts.
It also limits how nuch heat goes into the joint so although you have to work reasonably fast to avoid a 'dry joint', it should avoid overheating anything.
Either that or find a friend who works in the commercial computer repair business. They do this sort of thing all the time.
