I thought I share it with you.
We all know that our barges are good on diesel so I thought I`ll do a proper brim test.
I`v set for myself and my wife a little task, to travel from where we live in London back to our house in Poland on one tank.
I was driving my AEL 6spd manual, wife drove the AAT auto.
On the trip computer
AEL average mpg around 53.3
AAT aroung 50.5
We tried to keep an average speed of 75mph trough most of the journey, but in Poland it dropped to 45-55mph do to silly amount of speed cameras.
AEL made it on one, AAT had to be topped up about 20 miles before the end.
Next day filled up the AEL = 77.63 liters
I wanted to sell the AAT, well it was more of wifes idea. Now she wants to keep the AAT for her self.
I reckon that 900+ miles is possible with these cars.
Ok time to go back to bed as I still need to sleep that of. |

That's pretty impressive. I've had mine into the high 700s before with the light just flickering but chickened out at that point as I was in rural France and gaps between filling stations can be quite large.

Never really made such a test on my AAT 6-Speed, but, my calculations on a daily use show that the car does bettween 5,7 and 6,1 l/ 100 on a normal driving.
On urban driving it should do about 7 or 8.
I think this is very acceptable for a 2.5 TDi. |

A safer approach is to play “chicken” by creeping up to what might be the maximum travel distance from a full tank of gas over a period of several fill-ups—and keeping accurate records about how much gas you put in the car, when, and distance traveled. Noting how many miles traveled after the fuel gauge shows “E” (empty) might be a good idea, too. (For more about how many miles after “E,” click here.) At some point, rather than run out of gas and be stuck somewhere, you’ll decide on some maximum distance you’re comfortable with, and declare that maximum “close enough.”
This chart is a result of the second approach. It shows the distances traveled on each full tank of gas. On average (i.e., according to Excel), I’m filling up the gas tank every 410 miles. The “outliers” on this diagram show that I could comfortably drive 450 to 460 miles on a tank of gas in warmer months, probably 480 miles. After 480 miles, I better find a gas station fast! |

I don`t encourage anyone to do it and do not say that anyone can travel the same distance on one tank, it is only my personal experience.
I do agree with you that there are safer ways of checking the possible maximum distance that can be done on one tank, and doing it your way is one of it. Well I did it in a more extreme way... |

I've managed to get some impressive mileage on long road trips from Gateshead to Brighton and back. If I stick at or below 70mph, I can usually get over 60mpg. When I return home, I've usually covered over 700 miles and have over 1/4 tank left and go on to get some 900 miles, provided I avoid short trips. This is with a 1997 2.5TDi(140) with 6 gears.
I've found over the years that its best on motorways at a steady 70 than on single carriageway A roads where there's more braking and accelerating because of slower traffic, going though towns and negotiating roundabouts and so on. A lot of it's to do with being in 6th gear and it seems to have a sweet spot of getting its best mileage at around 60-65mph. I find the A6 starts to lug a bit at 50mph in 6th. It's much happier at 60 or above for cruising without going up and down gears all the time.
One day i hope to break the 1,000 mile barrier but that will involve keeping to 60 and travelling through the night to avoid congestion etc. |

Pretty simple, the questions in the title, i was just wandering on average how far a full tank gets you?
Oooh it might be usefull to put what model 106 you drive and what liter engine is.
I'll start: i have a 106 XL with a 1.124 ltr engine and a full tank (about £35-40 worth) takes me about 300 miles |

jonmark, looking at your other bizarrely tangential posts, I think your fuel tank may be full but you might be a few bricks short of a load. Congratulations on your pregnancy by the way.

What a remarkable and entertaining spamming effort, lifting faintly connected posts from other forums to promote their wares. I presume they are now banned. |

Slightly back on topic....
Just got 702 miles from 65l with my AEL Avant (true 49 mpg). This mostly motorway and dual carriageway, but with some (approx 50miles) of semi-rural commuting and round-town work. Extrapolating that gives 864 miles on 80 litres and I think it actually holds more than 80 l . I could also try driving slower - I rarely go less than 65 on m-way/dual carriageway - poor self-discipline....... I reckon the mid - 900s has to be possible with a bit of care.
Fuel used was Asdas cheapest with a dash of toolstation injector cleaner.
