I've never driven a 1.8T but I wouldn't say it was normal, mine has quite a short precise change.

All gears selected fine, forwards and backwards the movement seemed OK, just sideways left to right there seemed to be little spring loading and the gear lever felt a bit sloppy, adjustment needed maybe ?.

Did it move when you accelerate? Gearbox or engine mounts perhaps?

Nice and precise with good spring load on sideways action on mine. I quite like it. It's a nicer change than my RS4.
Mines a six speed 1.8T

Exact same model as yours, like I said all felt fine except sideways which was a bit floppy, anyone know if cable adjustment would tighten this up ?.

It's not a cable mechanism.
Don't know much more than that, other than on other models (My S2. my A6 and also the RS4) symptoms like this a cured by replacing the ball and socket (can't remember correct term) underneath the gearstick area.
That's what would be replaced with a shortshift.
I can ask my local specialists tomorrow, as I need to pop down and get some VAG screenwash.

I must have looked at the wrong video, would appreciate it if you asked your specialist how to cure this , I'm close to buying the car but want to make sure it's linkage related and not something inside the gearbox.

Drove another 1.8tq today and that didn't have a lot of resistance on the gear lever either, perhaps I'm just used to heavier gear shifts.
