hi all,

Some useful info for Coupe and 90 Quattro owners. both 10 and 20V with 38mm diametre piston GIRLING type calipers.

My CQ20V just failed on weak handbrake and when i say weak, it was actually 0% Laughing i knew something was amiss and thought i'd let the tester diagnose which side it was.

cue hunt for new O.S.R caliper...

TPS - £197 exchange Shocked
Halfords £153 exchange Shocked
Unipart £108 Confused
Ebay £68 but not in stock Rolling Eyes

I then did some research and found a brilliantly comprehensive online catalogue at www.brake-eng.com and worked through it for hours trying to find what cars the cq may share parts with.

It listed CA1195R (OSR) and CA1195 (NSR) for my car and these appear on the back end of various A6 quattros 1991-97, the 90 1987-91 and the A8 FWD 2.8 and 3.7 1994-2002!
Back onto ebay and found Autopartswharehouse listing exactly these 'CA' part numbers from brake-eng on their site for £43.95 and £5 P+P each! I got a pair and the best bit is; if you want to send the old calipers back you get £15 refunded to your accout per caliper.

Refurbished calipers for £29? yes please! Smile

need a bit more info...

year, engine size and if possible whether they are girling calipers at the rear or not.

the ebay site i looked at is an internet outlet for a proper retailer in birmingham and the phone number does allow you to speak to someone on the other end of the line who can verify the parts for you. I actually did the order over the phone in the end.

I know someone who recently sent his brake calipers from a 1969 Fiat Dino to EBC in Northampton, for a complete rebuild. I think it cost about 50 quid a side, so very reasonable compared to the higher numbers above. Worth a call I reckon.

I was fiddling with rear brakes at the weekend. Unless they're leaking, it might just be the sliders are stuck, in which case, heat the sliders with a blowtorch (remove the rubber boots first) drop in a bucket of cold water (to shock it and hopefully free the slider pin) then give it a tap with a hammer or try to turn with a spanner to free off.

They look pretty similar to Mk2 golf GTI rear calipers too. Has anyone checked to compare?

Edit: Just noticed it says quattro... I expect they have much beefier rear brakes... the EBC bit might still work though!
