Hi folks me again!!!
If you can remember that i have a 1990 2.3 20v coupé quattro with a 7a engine. she had a problem of stumbling in power when in high revs or under load, have replaced the air mass meter etc but not yet the knock sensors as has been suggested! However a strange thing has happened. Since this problem started i have been carrying some stuff around in the boot, of which was fairly heavy! ( i know i should have emptied it out) The boot is now empty and the stumbling of the engine has stopped and she now runs like she used to, all very nicely. i tested the theory as i thought i was going mad so put some heavy items in the boot and the problem came back"! stumbling in power under load and high revs. Emptied the boot again and problem gone!
So what i am asking is what is under the boot, i know fuel tank is but what would be there that with items in the boot would cause the engine to fault? are there air pipes or fuels pipes under there? does any one know?
Cheers
Jono

The fuel pump sits inside the tank, in a reservoir and sediment strainer and is accessible from the top.
The heavy weights may have caused an issue but there is a metal sheet under the carpet which lays over the tank to spread any point loads.
Maybe it was enough to deform the tank enough to affect the pump

the plug had came loose on my fuel pump, all the carpet in the boot needs to come out, then the screws holding the black panel needs un bolting, then you will have access to the panel under which is the fuel pump. the plug on top of mine had come loose some how AND the plug inside the tank, so it was down on power under load and eventually wouldnt start

Yeah, quite simple
Fold the rear seats down and pull the boot floor carpet back over to reveal three screws.
There is also another one hidden under a flap of carpet, Standing at the back of the car, it will be somewhere along the top of the storage cubby behind the bumper, left hand side as it follows round the spare wheel area.
I think the skin runs under the right hand arch liner a little but a bit of persuasion will see it out ok
