I picked up my A4 2.4tdi estate today. It didn't come with a handbook so got a couple of questions about switches etc. In the drivers door pocket there's two switches. I've no idea what they are for.
Second, on the dash, above the 'g' in mpg on the display is a '1'. It's there no matter what function I have displayed. Am I missing something here?
Anf finally. I know what most of the switches are for here but can anyone run through them to make sure I'm not going to get it wrong. Main ones I don't know are the up and down arows and the button between them.
Really impressed with the performance and good mpg too. I think I'm going to enjoy this car |

Glad you like it
Right...
1. Top switch turns off the anti-vibrate for the alarm, use this if the alarm is sensitive to wind, or locked while on a recovery truck or something. Bottom one disables the ultrasonic sensors so you can alarm the car and leave your dog inside for example.
2. There are two memory settings for the trip computer (DIS). Under the wiper stalk is a button, this will flick between memory 1 & 2. Memory 1 retains it's memory for two hours when the car is stopped and then resets, memory two is a cumulative memory. If you press and hold the button it resets memory one. Use the rocker on the end of the stalk to move between DIS functions.
3. The climate buttons move it off 'auto' and direct it to the chosen vents, up is screen vents, middle is dash vents and down is feet. The left hand heated window switch blows air to the screen from the top centre dash vent for demisting (at high fan speed) and the right is the heated rear screen. The arrow is air recirculation, ECON turns the aircon compressor off so it operates as a conventional air blower. If you press and hold AUTO on the drivers side it will synchronise the dual zone temperatures (until someone adjust the passenger side).
Tenner says you go outside and try this

Thanks for that and sorry, you lost your tenner I did go out to the car but only to drive to the local take away .
Another question, is the key coded to the car? If it is how much is another key?
I have found one fault. Drivers door speaker is intermittent. If the door is open it works, door shut it works when it feels like. Looks like I'll have to get the door panel off and replace the speaker wiring |

Lol I bet
The door speaker will be a broken wire in the rubber shroud in the door shut, another common problem. There's no simple solution other than to find and repair the break.
The keys are coded to the car. It's not something I've any experience of, it's been discussed in a few threads and the consensus seems to be you need a new key and a dealer to code it. It won't be a cheap job I don't expect. |

Next question, is it possible to set the clock to 12hour mode instead of 24? 24 hour clocks confuse my wife. Come to think of it most things confuse my wife |

I told her that but it's a bit complicated for her
Another quicky - I've pressed the screen demist button, the fan speeds up but I can only feel air from the vents each side on the top of the dash to demist the side windows. I assume air should come out of the central vents on the top of the dash?? |

It should do yes, a frequent issue is the actuator that controls the movement of the mechanism for the defrost motor becomes sticky.
I'm on my phone at the moment, I'll post a picture a bit later to explain. You might be able to free it up, but it might need a new one. (£80 ish I think). |

Or it might be a phone call to the garage I bought the car from. |

There are 5 screws to take the glovebox out, then you will see this....
The green linkage is the one for the dash demister vent, adjust the climate control and see if it moves, if not then persuade it to move. If that won't work then it's worth stripping and regreasing the motor before replacing it. You can manually move the mechanism and leave it in a semi demist position as a temporary fix.

My life has changed.. Holding down the AUTO button was a top tip..!
Small detail but...
Oh. And the two alarm buttons on the drivers door. When I bought my A4, I asked the guy what they were for and he looked surprised and said he'd never noticed them before..
I've still never used them as I don't know at what stage you 'press' them??! (and I don't have a dog)... |

Other people know more about the speaker cable wear in the door than I, but from dealing with those sorts of things myself with other cars, you are often better off taking it to someone who can repair the cable properly by replacing it (and knows how to take the panels and dash off, where need be) than trying to botch it with a bit of PVC tape and a twist here and there. Not that i'm suggesting it's your style but you never do know...!
On a budget, i'd dig around, find the issue and rejoin the cable properly.. Then try and make sure that the issues doesn't happen again to any of the other cables. The shorting out or simple lack of connectivity from amp to speaker can destroy the amp if it +,- meet for any period of time. If it's broken, it needs sorting now otherwise you could end up looking for a new head unit and related wiring..
Good to hear that the de-mist is sorted though..! Especially considering the weather we are having.. |

The speaker wiring shouldn't be a problem. It's just finding the time is the problem. Did plan on doing both jobs yesterday evening but ended up having to do a 4 hour drive to a Kent power station to check some of their equipment. Got there at around 7pm last night. Didn't get back until 3pm today It's all planned if for tomorrow if the weather is okay. |

I really don't fancy my start time tomorrow - 4am
Anyway, back of subject, when I press the 'spanner' button on the dash I get the service screen come up but it just shows
service due in
---miles
---days
Or something along those lines. Anyway, it just shows '---' where I would assume numbers should be?? |

Has the service interval been reset lately?
It take @ 500 miles after to re enable itself. |
