Okay, so I admit that I am no mechanic so when it comes to engines I am hopeless. According to the V5 I have a 1990 Audi 80 Sport 16v.
If that is the case what is the large unit on the side of the engine? It seems to have it's own distributor and there is a small switch-like item on the top.
Anyone who can shed some light on this would be greatly appreciated.

I've news for you, that is not a 16v engine, i would check chassis and engine numbers against your v5! Those pictures are of the fuel metering head.

Are you talking about the intake manifold (with the throttle cable at one end) or the fuel metering valve with the braided hoses attached?

Hmmm, confused now because the number on the engine block corresponds exactly to the number on the V5 and the V5 says this is an Audi 80 Sport so I am now at a loss because the owners manual does not show a fuel metering head, just a circular filter box

What they said. That's an 8v engine.

if your engine number starts 3A, then that's the correct number for that engine type.
