Whilst checking my spare today I noticed that the area holding the wheel was swimming with water, easily a couple of litres.
Any ideas? I have had a quick look and cannot see anything obvious.....

Check the rear wiper motor first, as the brass pipe that runs to the water-jet can break and allow water to run down the inside of the tailgate and into the spare wheel recess. There is a VAG kit for around £35 on Ebay. If you're replacing the entire motor - then take a seat before asking Audi parts - easily over £100.
My A4 avant had a new rear screen before I bought it (the date code on the glass indicated that it was made 6 months before I bought the car as indicated by a series of dots representing the months and a number for the year.... Pause whilst people pop out and check their windows!)
When this was fitted, they had to remove the centre brake light and the seal wasn't replaced properly. Water was forever getting into the lid. I popped it out and re fitted it correctly.
There's also two plastic bungs on the under side of the tailgate in the corners, and these cover drain holes.
Assuming they're still in place (I always remove them) then the water could build up and spill/splash through the lock and get into the spare wheel well.
Just an idea to check.
Good luck
Pete
