Allie is now 18 weeks preggers (woooo hoooo) and so the hunt was on again for a family orientated motor.
I know I bought the 1995 C4 A6 Avant 2.5TDi for the purpose last year, but I kind of spat the dummy when Allie and my mum recently called it old and unattractive It's been a bloody great car and I'll miss her.
So what to get?
NO WAY am I transporting a little un everywhere in my RS4, cream leather and kids shoes/sick/sweets/boogies/etc etc do not mix.
Needed to be an Avant, quattro in either petrol or diesel and Turbocharged.
The B6 A4 Avant I've been an admirer for a while, but finding a 1.9 TDi in quattro isn't easy.
Looked at one, but it was a right shed and in black (possibly the worst colour for showing any defects in paint)
The 2.5 V6 TDi is easier, but having gone through dodgy cams on my RS4 and knowing the V6 TDi can suffer the same, it kinda scared me off.
That left the 1.8T 20v motors.
Eventually hacked a deal out with a user on Audi-Sport.net after asking a bit of advice from our moderator James and I'm pleased to say I picked her up today.
I'm impressed. Very nice motor, pokey and comfortable with surprisingly decent fuel efficiency.
Weather today was atrocious, so she's a bit mingin from a 2 hour journey up the River M1.
Hopefully get her washed and spruced up tomorrow.
2004 A4 Avant quattro 1.8T "limited edition" (says that on the V5)
Basically S-line trim.
Not sure whether to keep the B7 RS4 reps, or bang on my 18" S8 Avus.
First mod, fit cruise next weekend.
A few piccies;

lovely looking car mate, sits well think those alloys actually really suit the car and great looking tail pipes too!. You need a group shot of all four of your Audi's while you've still got em all
Nice little nipper waggon you got there! And dont let Allie say "Does my bump look big in this?!"
nice one dude |

As I've said, ditch the RS4 reps and go for the Avus's |

Yep, leaning towards the Avus.
Love those wheels and spent a couple of years searching for them for a reasonable price.
Will try them on later today I think. Unless it's rains.....AGAIN |

Well as you know, I love the avus and wish I had a set of 18's rather than the 16's currently on the S2... but for some odd, inexplicable reason I actually quite like the wheels that you've got on at the moment... |

Only cos you want them
Never got round to switching today. On an Epic cleaning marathon.
Spent an hour or so hoovering and cleaning the inside of the big ole red bus ready for new owner tomorrow.
Then spent a good couple of hours on the inside of the new car. Gave it a wash and I'll polish and wax her tomorrow. |

Calling guru James!!
On translation of this german ebay advert, it says the lower grille will not fit the S-line bumper? That true?
Bonnet grille will fit, but what about the lower?
Gotta....gotta get rid of the nasty evil chrome.

Thats correct Jas, that looks like the non S-Line style lower grille (like mine) which isn't as deep as an S-Line style lower.
Vinyl wrap or paint is the common dechrome solution as the S-Line style lower grille alone is about £80. |

Cheers James
Think I'll dig the roll of de-chrome tape out.
I gather that you can remove the chrome trim from the grille, so I'll do that and try and get the tape on in one piece.
Thanks again |

Yes once the grille is out you'll see that you can tease the surround off starting at one end, it's quite straightforward.
And then you get this

Lol no sadly not, thats the 'chrome' trim painted. I just keyed it with some wet and dry and then sprayed it satin black. It's prone to chipping a bit, but I have several grilles so it's easy to keep on top of it |

Nice looking motor there.
Personally I prefer the original wheels... just my preference tho.
Looking forward to a 'project bus' type thread...
Surprised you went for a 1.8T though; aren't those motors supposed to be a touch on the fragile side? |

When you guys say "old" or original wheels"
Meaning the Avus? as they are an older wheel than the B7 RS4 wheel style.
Not going to be a huge project. First thing will be fitting cruise. Then I'll fit the trip computer stalk and activate the full DIS display.
Then an RNS-E navi plus unit will go in. Needs converting to double DIN and I've got a bit more reading to do before I get it all straight in my head.
Hid's will go in too, when the replacement H7 bulbs land.
Mechanically wise, don't think the 1.8T is that fragile? heard lots of horror stories of the oil strainer blocking up, mainly on cars that have been on longlife service regimes.
Mine was on a longlife plan early on, so in light of this, it'll be going to trusty local specilaists and getting the sump whipped off to check strainer over. Be on the safe side.
Prolly get that done next week.
Unfortunately, one week before I picked her up, the sellers wife reversed and caught the nearside rear corner of the bumper on a low wall, scuffing it up a bit. Cue a reduction in purchase price to my satisfaction and getting a quote Friday for the repair.
Still not switched the wheels.
Big work going on in my house at the minute with new bathroom, kitchen and everywhere decorated, and I'm the mug doing it, couple that with long hours at work and the cars take a back seat at the minute.
Bloody fussy women to blame. lol.

I actually prefer it with the RS4 wheels rather than the Avus. It might be the way they were photoshopped but it's too much silver colour for me, needs breaking up with spokes
Other than that mate, it's looking sweet. Glad you got a petrol quattro. A guy I know has the B6 1.9TDIq Avant and he's forever saying how guttless it is (Red 'I' too)? the 2.5TDI's are fine with quattro but aren't as solid as the 1.9's |

Common problem too with the 1.8T's is that the coilpacks are attached to the plugs and are very tempremental to movement. You have to remove the coil pack to get the plug out! |

wow, that's a handsome car Jason !
wouldn't expect anything less from you though
if it had the 1.9TDI 130bhp engine it would be the perfect car for me !
fit my current turbo and make 235bhp dieselpower

Yeah, have read that. I think I'll be giving Audi a call. My motor has just recently had a coilpack replaced by the previous owner.
@ Geoff. Yeah mate, familiar with the coilpacks. S2 has them along with the RS4 mate.

.................................................................................
RNS-E purchased (Thanks to Route-66 )
Now just gotta get the single din to double din sorted in my head. Lots of links around the net, that all bloody lead to dead links elsewhere. Have yet to see a single picture of someone doing this, although loads of people saying they have. By far the worst place is audiforum.us who look like they took over the great navplus forums.................and then killed all the links. Grrrr.
With this in mind, when I come to do it soon, I'll do a massive concise picture run-through so it's all documented.

Yeah, heard a lot of nasty stories about knackered engines because of that oil strainer. I think that the long life service thing was one of the worst ideas anyone at Audi has had in a long while.
I've taken mine off the long life service schedule - I get an oil / filter change every 5,000 miles.

Women! can't live with 'em, can't sell 'em to the highest bidder.... apparently, some of them get "upset" when you threaten to sell them sort of like when you say that you wish you'd married their sister.. this is also 'wrong'. |

James is going to hate me..........................BUT.........................I think I like the RS4's over the Avus
Okies, HID's in, LED sidelight bulbs in, phone mount sorted, engine degreased and cleaned, left and right engine covers fitted and new expansion tank fitted..
Did a full scan with vag-com. Glad to report no codes stored in any of the accessible modules. Ouput tests on the instrument cluster is fun
Still to do, fit the RNS-E.
Have had to buy another, as I was ripped off by Route-66 He never told me the screen looks to have been cleaned with a brillo, or that the sides had been cut down.
Anyhow, another purchased and just waiting for it shipping.
Got it sorted in my head what needs doing, along with coding it up. I'll add in a reversing camera when it's in.
Also got to fit cruise and full DIS. As far as I can work out, I'll also need a new steering wheel control module to be able to run both full DIS and cruise. The version at the minute would only support full DIS.
Wanted to de-chrome the grilles today, but the piggin weather wouldn't let me.
Some piccies of progress so far.
Engine before;
Engine after a bit of a clean up, new expansion tank and a couple of covers;
Random as I was giving her a bit of a going over;
Jeezus, that stuff smells rank (Iron-X). Barf......
