welcome Wink

Hopefully bladerunner will see this and advise better; relay could be behind lower dash binnacle, drivers side. Could be the rear boot light staying on when closed? If so, possibly a faulty switch in the boot leaving the light on all the time. May be worth checking with rear seats down and get someone to open/ close the boot lid, see if the light turns out. If you can't do that, try removing the bulb, see if that stops it....

sounds like that's you're problem- possibly staying open when it shouldn't.

Not sure what it's used for- have you got a Haynes manual?

There's no 205 in the quattro, will look at mine when it's not raining.. if you can tell me what position it is in, I can tell you what it does, where is it in relation to the glow relay? (blue coloured and 202 from memory)

Pull the relay and put up it's Audi part number. Should be able to tell from that what it is.

Ok I've found it on the Quattro, originally I thought you meant it was with the relays under the dash tray, there are two in the side panel on the Quattro one a tall relay the other 205..

On the Quattro it doesn't operate with fuse out or in, or with the ignition, will go get the p/n.. pressing it manually with the lid off doesn't seem to do anything either..

205 is p/n 431951253D but it's a pretty standard relay so could be used for many things..

The footwell cover has a location diagram and it shows relay in position 5 as central locking / LAS.. with it removed the central locking still works and I don't know what LAS is..

Tried turning on everything I could think of and nothing made the 205 relay operate.. really want to know what it does now Confused

While we are on the subject of relays, for TDI owners there is one in the passenger footwell cover, number 219. this is engine ECU power relay so I carry a spare because if its unplugged, (not working), the car wont start..

p/n for 205 is in my previous post, I found nothing specific about it but it is just a standard 40a relay used in other cars for other functions..

I'll get the 219 relay P/N, but agin it's another standard relay type as far as I can tell and is in the same place on the passenger side.. ebay should have a few on once we find p/n there were a few 205 on eBay too.

e-t-k-a was no help just saying contact relay or something similar for the 205 p/n

LAS = locking and alarm system

guessing it's your alarm that's gone wonky and won't work if you try it

blade runner slightly of topic this bud.. my viscose fan is very noisy and the belt is squeaking will the fan be causing the belt noise or will i need a new tension spring as well as the fan..and what are they like to change.. or is it likely to run like that for years with no damage done.. only do about 4000 a year but i am keeping the car for a good wile yet i would think... thanks in advance scott..
ps what would be the right sort of figure to have this job done... if its above my station and where would you suggest for the parts.. i have used gsf in the past thank you

Usually it is the tensioner bearing, but worn belts can cause it does your car had a/c and where are you?

tensioner bearing can often be re-greased as it's expensive to by (you have to buy the whole bracket too

read the question & my reply to artb in this topic here

i think i read that its a job in its self too remove the fan on that post or am i mistaken... i read it a few days ago when i joined the group.. will have another look just to make sure its the same post..
in answer to your question i am in rochdale about 60 miles away from you.. the tensioner and all belts were changed 5 yrs ago when i got the motor.. and yes your right it was around 150 for the bracket and roller.. i did not change the spring though at the time.. or re grease the fan bearing.. i think i was quoted around 90 ish for viscose fan but i didnt no if that was the clutch or the full thing including bearing.. they didnt seem to know at the shop i rang... ps yes it has ac i had it gassed when i got it but i think its leaked as its not getting very cold now... i can move the fan up and down by a good few mill either way so suspect bearing to be shot.. what you think is best too do with it..new one or re grease old one.. thanks bud scott

The viscous fan often has some play in it, to be honest it's very hard to diagnose this accurately from my PC, but there are two parts to the fan bearing the main bearing and the viscous clutch..

The main bearing is iro 140 from TPS, the viscous clutch not sure but I have a used spare..

The main bearing can be re-greased if it's dry but not worn, however you have to get it out & it's not easy, the easiest way is to source the bracket second-hand with a good bearing, (also fitted to UR S6 with a/c). bracket is big aluminium affair that the a/c compressor fits to, and is different on non a/c cars although the bearing part is the same..

It can be swapped out without removing the front of the car or rads with the right tooling, takes a few hours to do

Do not source from audi 100 C4.. it may fit but uses a different bearing, and bracket might be different..

Viscous fan isn't, or rather shouldn't be slipping when at idle, (not enough fan drag), so shouldn't be causing the squeal if it's happening at idle..

might be worth getting some 3 in 1 spray oil (the type with a straw) and squirting a small amount on each part till the squeal goes away, try not to get too much on the belt as that may slip too.. (oil each roller while stopped one at a time then try it when you get the right one it should go away or be quieter)

with a/c there is another possibility the a/c pump clutch bearing, (although I've never know one to go..)

so to sum up on a/c cars you have, tensioner bearing, viscous fan bearing (hard to oil), viscous fan clutch, alternator bearings (front & rear), a/c compressor clutch idle bearing, and the belt it's self which can slip / squeal on the pulleys

I can do any of this but it would be best to isolate what is causing the squeak 1st..

If you are passing J29 M1 in the next few weeks arrange to come past me so I can hear it live..

read here about the viscous fan main bearing, note update since that topic it can be swaped out without removing the front of the car unlike the linked topic in the below thread, (you have to get the bracket off the car), and although it's ideal to dissemble the bearing & clean the bearing out with petrol, it can be regreassed without this, and it then doesn't need to have the pulley flange pressed off & back on.. It's still a job that requres knowledge to get it out of the housing to re-grease, or fit a new one, (you can still buy a new bearing btw as said iro 140 + from tps)

hi bud i read the posts.. my conclusion is it needs a new vibration damper and bearing greased on fan lol..
mine makes that same chirp when i stop the engine.. like you say its best if you could see and hear it.. if i do pop over that way i will be sure to mention it to you and if its ok i would pop in at yours.. i will try the lube on the pulleys first and let you know what i find out..
ps i noticed the vibration damper was jumping around a bit when engine running not sure if thats it doing its job or its worn out.. you have been a great help bud thanks

just to confirm we are singing from the same hymn sheet, The tensioner is the bearing / bracket / spring affair that auto tensions the ancillary belt.

the vibration damper is incorporated into the front pulley on the crank that drives the ancillary belt.

These can delaminate and while I can't be 100% sure as I've not had a failure myself it seems beginnings of delamination are a turn off squeak (getting worse), and lots of movement of the ancillary belt tensioner, (jumps up and down a lot on idle), and death rattle from front of engine when it's near failure.

more detail here

sure are bud.. i think its starting to delaminate not got to the death rattle yet but its bouncing around quite a lot.. it was reading them posts that made me take a look at it and the way it sqeeks as you stop the engine.. tried to oil the bearings on the pulleys to no avail.. one spray of water mist on the belt and it shuts up.. also when i stop the engine as the fan continues to turn it sounds very dry on the bearing.. it defo will need some attention soon.. if i can get over to you over the next few weeks for a proper diag that would be fantastic...

no more battery drain its starting first time every time.. thanks for the tips and the help..much happier now i must say... 200 ma might not seem much but over a few days it certainly takes its toll.. if it was used daily i dont think i would of noticed it.. still not tried another relay but am working on testing this one.. if its ok i will just leave it in my tool box lol
