It wasn't intended to be a project at first, bought as most of you know for impending family duties, but sadly that was not to be.
We decided to keep it in the hope it can fulfil it's role in the not to distant future. Besides, we both really like it.
1995 Audi A6 2.5 TDi Avant, 5 speed manual, non quattro with the AAT five cylinder 10v engine (one cam )
Originally owned by MarkCov, (who spookily owned project sooty before me ) then MikeO, it's been up in the North East only 3 miles away from me while away from the forum.
Sat 10/04/10. Picked up yesterday for a tidy sum.
Tomorrow me and Allie will wash, machine polish, hoover and wax her, but today I needed a bit of car maint to take my mind off other things, so...........
Bye bye Grandpa wheel;
Hello sport wheel;
It's a 1995 S2 sport wheel. The slip ring on the back is the same part as the grandpa wheel. Splines exactly the same, as would be expected. Same airbag connector and horn connector.
Grandpa slip ring;
Sport slip ring;
Also removed instruments and swapped in a spare re-bulbed ATD.
Wondering why the reading was a bit high, I traced the sensor only to find it tie wrapped to a rad hose
With it repositioned, it's now reading the same as the sensor in the S2 and Sooty.
Last but not least, no matter what I did with the fitted Pioneer headunit, it constantly lost it's memory. Downloaded schematics and even hooked up right to permanent live and a switched live, it lost it's memory everytime it was turned off.
Fug it, off to Halfords where I got an clearance ex-display Kenwood MP3 headunit for £50.
Will get lowered a bit (not too much) and thinking a set of 19" B5 RS4 style rims will suit her well. That'll be next month, what with a huge bill on the S2 and buying this, I've killed my current account stone dead.

You might want to chat with Bladerunner on here as his P reg is to die for......
He helped out alot on this one......as did OUR friends over at the Lion Garage in Hinckley.....in fact they had the Spanner's on it the most....
I do regret selling it as I do not like my Current V reg A6....but no one wants to take her off my hands.....
And to think I spent alot of cash on this one and sold it.....I'm nothing but a fool.......
And I had to spend a ton of cash getting the V reg A6 right days after I bought I think I was taken on that one.......
But hey ho!
I never TOWED with this car, Jason if you want any info from when I owned her let me know.,......
Mark

Was rather spooky when I found out off Jon that this was your old car. I'd already contacted the seller before being told.
I think that'll probably be in a scrappy somewhere. Best place for Vauxhalls (Before I get shot down by anyone, I had three poxhalls many moons ago)

Noticed in the history receipts that Jason's place had done the cambelt.
Really is a nice car. Sure I could have held out for an AEL and maybe quattro, but again as before with the 80, it's a daily workhorse/al-rounder type motor and the fuel economy is a little better I'm led to believe with 2wd over quattro.
Set the cruise (nice one Jon ) and waft into work
Tut, I'll be buying an auto next

Is this the same engine that Volvo used in the early 850s? my mate has one of those and gets a very regular 45mpg everywhere. Hugely practical car Jas, us gangly people like the roomier layout. No more head on roof.
I did but i was half suspecting to see you in an S4/S6. The coupe is surprisingly practical for kids as you probably know! The 90 is the least practical out of all the cars i have had of that era, non folding seats make it feel a very small car.
Question, see that little tow bar ball, i have one as well but what exactly is it supposed to do? My trouble is the removable towbar has been removed, no idea where it is, what variety or where to find another one.
And lastly are you sure the temperature gauge works.. 27.5! Assume thats not from this weekend!

No idea Iain. This is the first car I've ever owned that's had a towbar.
As I don't intend ever using it, it'll get removed at some point.

From a post of mine further back up the thread mate;
Quote:
Also removed instruments and swapped in a spare re-bulbed ATD.
Wondering why the reading was a bit high, I traced the sensor only to find it tie wrapped to a rad hose
With it repositioned, it's now reading the same as the sensor in the S2 and Sooty.

It looks very nice a shiny jas and very red
Think the 850's all had AEL but yes it's the same engine..
Cruise is excellent being electronic.. I use it all the time although I can beat it by a few mpg if I really try but it's just too hard to bother mostly..
Sorry to hear your bad news, but at least you are in the C4 Tdi club now

Anyone know where the intermittent wiper relay is hidden? it's not in the engine bay fuse box
To save the hunt? is it in the passenger footwell? or behind drivers parcel shelf?
I've got a programable relay to fit.
TIA

Don't know, sorry - but I'd like to hear more about the programmable relay - I had one on my old 80 Sport and was very pleased with it. Are they still available?

They certainly are Mike. There's actually two versions out there.
The better of the two operational wise, is the version with part number 3B0 955 531. The other is 357 955 531.
(3B0 version from larger VW's, like Passat and 357 version from a Golf)
3B0 versions work like this;
1/ Turn on intermttent,
2/ Turn off and wait the desired time interval,
3/ Turn back on intermittent and it will wipe at the interval you specified.
357 version works like this;
1/ Turn on intermittent and count the time interval you want,
2/ Turn off and immediately turn back on again and it will wipe to the interval you specified.
I've got 3B0 versions in use in the S2 and the 80 TDi. Another 3B0 version is going in the A6.
Looking at around £25 for a new one from the dealers.
A few 357 versions on ebay at the minute, but they look to be secondhand.
HTH's,
Jase..

HID's in.
Located the passenger side ballast atop the ABS unit. Same place as I put user Lune's (Ben) in his S6 way back over three years ago.
Drivers side is atop the chassis mount to the front bumper.
Strong 3M double sided foam trim tape used to secure.
Excuse crappy fone camera, they aren't really green

Thanks Jon, intermittant wiper relay was under drivers shelf as you said.
It's the one with 299 printed on top in the below picture.
Also received and fitted this tuning box today. Bought off user "2qu" (thanks Robin) it's a bit mad now .
Can't see them for sale any longer on Webcon's website, but found a bit of info on TDiclub about them.
As far as I can work out, because it has an attachment to a vacuum/boost line, it only pumps more fuel in when at a certain boost pressure. Put your foot down now and it has noticeably more oomph.
Mad as a bag of wasps
The instructions were a bit vague concerning where to tap into a vac/boost line, so I put it in the vac/boost line that comes off the rear of the inlet manifold. I presume this line terminates at the ECU.
Only downside, well two actually, are:
1/ Noticeable black smoke on hard acceleration (not to bothered really)
2/ Temptation to welly it

Oh, I'm missing a bit of the engine .
It's the air intake trunking that runs along the top of the offside headlamp. Anyone got a spare for sale?
