I've recently been getting a fault on a 1993 audi coupe 20v which has me confused and my local audi dealership stumped.
Whilst driving in hot/humid weather (i.e. the last few weeks) after driving for 30mins or so, then engine braking down from 5th into 4th the revs will fall away to nothing. Somtimes just for a few seconds and there back up, sometimes they just won't. If it's the latter then when i try and restart the car it turns over but will not start. This can last for 30mins or the most recent time for 4hrs untill it will start again.
The Audi dealership had it for a week, but couldn't get it to fault. From what they told me, because the audi's so old they're not covered by they're recovery servce so if they drove too far they'd be stuck with no way to get back to the dealership. Great job by John Fox audi in nottingham there.
The AA driver that towed me home last said there was power to the coil but no spark. I took that to mean a fault on the coil or distributer. So i opened up the dist. cap and found it full of black scum and fragments of a tan plastic. Anyone have any ideas what this plastic is? Some sort of blown seal?
I've ordered a new cap n rotar arm to start with but may need to change the dist. Haynes don't make manuals for this model so where do i find some sort of writeup on it? I could do with a set of wiring diagrams as well if anyone knows where i should be looking.
If anyone has any other ideas on what this fault could be, it would be greatly appreciated. This has been going on for far too long and audi just arn't interested.
Ta in advance

The tan plastic is probably remnants of your distributor cap or rotor, the black scum from the carbon tip on the cap. You`ve done the right thing getting a new cap and rotor. I doubt if Audi even looked there, this is basic stuff and they should be ashamed. Good luck and let us know once you`ve fitted the new parts.

Some of these dealers are unbelievable. It's a real shame that Audi do not give more focus to cusotmer care and start putting these people in line

Well i've fitted the new parts and alls running fine. Although i still can't believe all the trouble i've had over a £30 simple parts swap.
Ta for the help, but if anyone knows of where to get a haynes manual equivalent for the 1993 coupe or at least some wiring diagrams that'd be a great help for future probs.

Haynes did a manual but it isn't much cop. The Bentley one is much better but also much dearer. You can get these through the club.
