I have recently replaced the Lambda probe in my Audi 80 2.0 8v. This has improved the MPG a little and also cured an very metallic "pinking" sound that the car had at almost anything over 3000 revs.... Or so I thought.
Although this Metallic pinking type sound is not as bad as it was it is still there. It seems to occur mostly on overrun, and not while accelerating.
Anyone got any ideas what I should do/check next. It has recently had plug leads changed, dizzy cap. Due for a plug change in about 6000 miles.
BTW it runs really well but this sound is really annoying and detracts from the otherwise perfect Audi experience
Cheers,
Steve.

From your description its not Pinking or Detonation as this doesn`t happen on overun. Could be your hydraulic Tappets ?

Hmmm, I will have a think about that! the Tappets are certainly very quiet normally. I hardly ever even here them on start up, so it would surprise if it was. The reason I think it is not mechanical is the same noise but worse was present when accelerating before the change in Lambda probe, and it when away imediately I changed the probe, started the engine and drove the car. I was wondering if there was another mesuring device, that altered the mixture / timing that might not still be working correctly causing an inefficient combustion.....
I will have another listen
Cheers,
Steve.

You may have a bit of slack somewhere in the engine, how many miles you got on the clock. Double check timing marks on the cambelt for piece of mind and also that the belt is tensioned correctly, as a rule this is around 90 degree twist of the belt in the centre of its longest run.

Ahem, 233,000 I had the cambelt changed by my local garage while the head was off for a decoke and new valve stem seals. It may be worthwhile checking the timing marks, although I do trust the mechanic but people make mistakes...
I must admit it does still sound quite good considering the mileage, but little noises like this start to worry me.

This sounds like the common distributor rattle often seen on 20v cars. http://www.20v.org has instructions on how to reduce it but it's not straightforward and if you bugger it up you may end up needing a new distributor.
