Hi guys,

I recently changed insurer to Churchill who are now wanting an installation certificate to prove I have an alarm fitted to my Coupe. As it's the factory alarm, I took it to Edinburgh Audi on Saturday so that they could take a look and confirm this for me.

Unfortunately they say they can't tell as their records don't go that far back. They got in touch with Audi UK today who also cannot tell which alarm has been fitted.

All they can say is that an aftermarket alarm has never been fitted and that they think it's a Thatcham 2 alarm that's been installed.

Has anyone had similar issues before? Does anyone know how I would go about proving which alarm is installed?

It's a 1994 Coupe 2.6E. The alarm sounds a horn that appears to between the bodywork between the passenger door and rear wheel.

Churchill are now telling me that they can't insure the car against theft unless proof is provided to them soon. If I can't get this I'll have to cancel my insurance and go elsewhere.

Thanks in advance.

Steve

My first answer is forget Churchill and find another insurance company.
I have never been asked to provide a certificate for a factory alarm!!!
The alarm is the most basic of alarms, ive stripped many 80's, Coupe's and have never found an electrical box / alarm brain. As you have said the horn is on the N/S of the boot area.

the alarm control unit is either next to the alarm horn on a mounting plate or the alarm ecu is built in with the central locking pump and infrared keyfob locking system, i dont know if audi can get the info for you, from the part number on the alarm ecu and give you some sort of proof, i thought they would have thought of this already, so looks like you may need to change insurer.

I think you're both right, I'll chalk this one up to experience and switch insurers.

I'll never be using Churchill again. It's a ridiculous ask for a car that's nearly 20 years old and barely worth a grand!

If it's any help, they were usually Scorpion alarms.

Picture of the fob will be the giveaway.

As for installation certificates - tell them to do one. You don't get one of them with a new Audi so why should a 20 year old one be any different.
