Hi guys and girls Very Happy

Got a potential job change on the horizon which puts my mileage up considerably from 0 to 20 miles a day, plus 150 miles at the weekend. Not exactly the "long way down" but enough to make me think twice about keeping my 20mpg V8 Range Rover Classic as the everyday car Laughing

I've been looking at 80 tdi's, I've always wanted either a 80 or a 100 (if I could manage a C4 2.5tdi I would!), something early 90's. Can I expect a decent 50mpg from one and what modifications can be made to get the most enjoyment and economy out the engine?

What is there to look out for, am I looking at the right model and how much should I be paying? Home mechanics is not a problem at all, I am more than capable of keeping it roadworthy, but need reliabilty!

Any advice or offers of suitable cars welcome Very Happy

cheers

When I had project sooty for a while, I managed to get 700miles from a single tank regularly- we know she had done over 245,000 miles- the odometer was broken and stopped working so no idea how many it had done. Was a 1.9Tdi, a little gutless at times, but great MPG....

Steve as Mike has said the 80 1.9tdi is a great fuel economical car, not so good for short round town distances I must add, but with motorway miles you'll be amazed at the economy, I recently got just over 600 miles from a tank running an auto box and I dont tend to drive slowly Very Happy, they do have a problem on the fuel pump though, quite a few seem to have a problem hunting at tick-over, which has turned out to be a fairly easy fix, have a read of the following links http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?12393-Audi-80-tdi-juddering-bucking-jerking&s=7e6646487179352d8b79ebe6d9232ff3&highlight=judder%2A , http://pics.tdiclub.com/data/529/13523tdi-technik-eng.pdf , http://www.tdiclub.com/TDIFAQ/ , https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B5kG3R_M3YWVMjI1MjFhNDEtZTQ0YS00OTAyLWI2MTktMDJmMjUyNmI1NDI0/edit?pli=1 and finally http://www.audifans.net/ftopict-38474.html the last 2 cover how to repair the hunting at tick-over, try to steer clear of the automatics as some have underlying gear-box problems, but if the gear-box has been serviced properly at 60k intervals you shouldn't have a problem. the following link will give you the various original specifications to which ever you go for http://www.automobile-catalog.com . Hope this is of help
