I tried carpet spray adhesive, that didn't work. The problem seemed to be the crumbling foam backing... I was advised to change the whole headlining. That's never going to happen.
Let us know how you get on, my headlining is held up with bits of cardboard wedged in the hatch trim |

As stated above, glue rarely works and is just a quick fix !
Sooner or later it will come down again ! All the foam backing needs to be removed to give the glue any chance of holding the headlining up !
I have the same problem and the rear is now held up by an assortment of bits of card
You need to do this http://www.tvr-cerbera.net/Public/Audi_Coupe_Headlining/Index.html
And so do I |

Good article!
That looks nearly as bad as replacing a heater matrix.
Maybe I'll try removing the hatch trim, clean the foam away and re-glue ... |

Why not get a upholster to make you one ? It may be the only way to go ,all the roof linings that are in the cars that I break are like it as the foam behind them has a shelf life . |

That material you use for covering hi-fi speakers in, works a treat plus its pretty cheap.
Or use a lot of V's stockings |

I tried taping the headlining up, but that lasted a day. So....
I had some of this stuff lying around (free samples available):
http://www.richco.co.uk/products/grommets-and-bushings.html?grpcode=K1050
That's pushed onto the hatch trim and wedges the edge of the headlining against the roof. Better than the previous bits of card.
Let's see how long that will last.

the card is up; it's the trim that isn't. Didn't have time to look at it this week.... it's gonna be a weekend job when the weather is more favourable. I've seen some replacement trim I want to cover it with, as long as I can get the old stuff and foam off without damaging the backing....
It means most of the interior trim will need to come out- a lot will need to come out anyway to repair the damage to the rear quarter light glass when some scroat tried to nick the car earlier this week (I'll do a separate thread) |

I had this problem on my S8 here in Dubai. The heat destroyed the adhesive and the head lining just delaminated itself. I tried fixing it with glue but this was a disaster. I ended up getting an upholsterer to re-upholster it. Quite cheap really, just some Indian in a back street workshop. You could try double sided tape. I've used a double side tissue tape over here on my door cards and this was pretty effective. It's very thin so doesn't add to the thickness. Could be an option if all else fails. Or find yourself a cheap Indian. |

Didn’t do it on my 80, but recently replaced the headlining on my Freelander which was sagging.
Glueing up the existing stuff won’t help as the foam will have disintegrated to powder.
I used a foam backed brushed foam and adhesive kit from these guys and it was spot-on
http://www.as-trim.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=5&zenid=4tlfeq743fkb9jqu5m3tut1hq2
Hardest part is getting the existing headliner out without damaging anything. I had to ease out the pillar trims and the rubber trim all round the inner windows, etc. A manual is good as there are usually a few tricky bits.
The moulded backing on the freelander was fibreglass and I had to scrub off the old perished foam to get a good base first. Fingers do this well as it just rolls up like breadcrumbs, but wear gloves if you do this or you’ll get fibreglass in your fingers. A soft-ish wire, or hard nylon brush also works but will clog a bit - if you use those be careful not to go through the fibreglass!
That adhesive comes out deliberately like rubbery cobwebs and won’t run or bleed through the fabric.
I will say it transformed the interior afterwards and felt like a great job which would last for years. Going to have to tackle the GFs Mk4 GTI soon as it’s starting to go a bit also! |
