Close to buying the A4 1.8tq Avant I've been looking for but I'm wondering how much less of a car it is than an S2, I want a nice everyday family car, have other sunny day toys Smile , so is it the A4 or can an S2 be a good everyday car ?.

And there lies a main problem. They are old, take more maintenance, are more expensive to maintain and some parts are becoming hard to find. Ok, you can find most stuff eventually with a lot of searching, but more often than not, the hard to get stuff has to be secondhand, with all the pitfalls that brings.
"Old" school indeed. You find yourself chasing a never ending list of things to do, parts to replace and bits broken.

They are both vastly different machines. Of course you can use the S2 as an everyday car, but it's less comfortable and a LOT more thirsty.

I used my S2 as an everyday car for 6 years, but I enjoy the A4 more for this purpose alone. The A4 is quieter, more comfortable, has better seats, a better driving position (banging your head off the roof cos the seats will go no lower gets on your tits) and is far easier to drive everyday.
The S2 is more "raw" for want of a better word. Less refined.

The S2 has more performance, granted, but a remapped 1.8T (if performance matters that much) can be had upto around 200bhp, which is not far from an ABY's 230bhp.
Torque will never be matched though.

As an everyday, it's like comparing apples and oranges.
I did enjoy my S2, as many people on here will tell you and it was a hard decision to sell it (only 5 months ago), but time moves on and as an everyday now?....................no thanks.
As a toy, go for it. I would have kept it for this purpose alone, but also having an RS4, the A4 and the S2, I was struggling for space.

Jase..

Thanks Jase, that's made my mind up for the A4, plus finding a really good low miles S2 wouldn't be easy. I thought about a B5 RS4 for a daily but a 1.8tq makes more economic sense.

Paul.
