A great and very informative thread Jase, as always
Good to hear of progress and news chez Armitage - huge congrats to you both and I look forward to hearing more positive news from deepest Spenny.
I've not been on here for a few months - long story, but three months work in Australia is the main excuse... I hope we manage to catch up again soon.
In the meantime, Merry Christmas to one and all,
Alan

Hello Alan, long time no see.
Working in Oz eh? Did you just go, or the missus too?
Nice to see you around and hopefully we'll catch up next year some time.

Hi Jase,
It was a three-month spell for me, initially by myself for the first four weeks, then Barbara joined me for the rest of the time. It was a fab opportunity, too good to miss; work was challenging but good fun too - and we made the most of every weekend, getting out and about as much as possible. I also managed to blag a paddock pass for the MotoGP at Phillip Island - it was rude not to.....
I have the chance to return next month for a two-year stint, but have decided against it for various reasons.
Anyway, less of me - it's great to hear from you, so good luck and very best wishes to you both,
Alan

Bargain bagged of fleabay.
I miss having the autodim rear view mirror in my daily driver (RS4 has one, plus the wing mirrors too - at £280 each if I need the glass.....HELL!!!!.)
Got the mirror for £24 shipped. It's from a 2003 A3.
Not long until the baby is here, so ear marking Sunday to fit the mirror, cruise and if time, the reverse camera.

What's that about best laid plans?
Sunday scuppered by Allie's useless goon of a brother
On a different note. Anyone with a 1.8T 20v engine will probably be aware of the sludge/contaminate issue in the sump, causing the gauze in the oil pickup tube to block up? No? you should be.
This can lead to low oil pressure to the top of the engine, increased wear and ultimately, failure..........big style.
Had the car into local specialists to get this issue checked and they found this;
A random picture leeched from the net of what it should look like when new;
So, the guys removed the sump, cleaned it out, replaced the oil pickup tube and I also asked them to replace the oil pump as a precautionary measure.
New oil and filter of course.
Lucky escape me thinks as this would have got worse and the engine may have popped.
Parts not that expensive;
Pickup tube = 06B 115 251 @ £7.30 + VAT
Seal for above = N0 282 222 @ £2.49 + VAT
Oil pump = 06A 115 105B @ £65.00 + VAT
The usual for oil (I use VAG Platinum) and a genuine filter.
Not checked yours? GET IT CHECKED.
Jase..

How much labour was involved to get the pickup out ?, does the crossmember have to be dropped to get the sump off ?.

Four hours labour. Yes mate, the subframe needs dropping to get sump out.

What I thought , guess the engine has to be supported from above then.

Speaking to the guys today, I thought it was just all down to cars being on longlife servicing that was the main cause.
They said that is one of the reasons, but also there's some breather hoses that run round the back of the engine and next to the turbo that can get chocked up, oil deposits then carbon up and fall into the sump. Also something about a plastic baffle in the sump that can break down. And finally, bits of the dipstick guide break off and fall into the sump.
Lots of stuff floating around in there
pauly7 wrote:

Yup, engine supported across the wings with a beam support.

The mesh in that pickup looks exactly the same as was used in 80's GTi,s, I had an 85 scirroco GTX that sounded the buzzer on the way home from buying it, I burned the crap off and tweaked some larger openings in the mesh.

I've also heard it can be due to mixing the wrong types of oil, not sure what truth's in that.

Autodim fitted.
Easy enough job.
Wired into a couple spare terminals inside the interior light. Switched 12v when the lights are switched on.
Six pins on the autodim light, I only needed pins 1 and pin 2 (1 = switched 12v and 2 = earth)
Everything self explanatory from the pics. Third time I've done this on various cars
The couple of spare terminals. The top one is the earth.
Finger covering the light sensor on the rear, tricking the dimmer into thinking it's dark. Light present on front sensor means it dims down.

Thanks guys.
Nice to see you about Andy .
Had planned today to do a few things. But all that changed at 05.30.
Allie went into labour. My daughter was born weighing 6lb 14oz at 18.43. Allie was a star. The whole show done on gas and air only. She was fully dilated even before we got to the hospital.
Probably THE single most traumatic thing I've ever been through. I really don't know how women do it.

Very best wishes. Normally the dad gets left out initially as everyone fusses over the wife and newborn. Enjoy the days and years to come... (you'll be constantly smiling!)
Proud dad of two wonderful daughters 13 and 10 (Dad... aka taxi-driver and a general mr fix-it).

Thank you gents.
Can't describe how I feel at the minute. Immensely happy and proud. She's beautiful.
Sad that Allie and Charlotte had to stop in hospital over night (bit of bother with placenta, but all ok now) but looking forward to tomorrow.
Amazing experience

She's a cutey alright
I'm absolutely bushed. Up at 15.00 on Thursday and not been to bed since.
Can't sleep though, I'm still high from the gas and air

Thanks for all the best wishes everyone. Really hits a spot and is most appreciated
Allie and Charlotte still in hospital until tomorrow as Allie wasn't passing water as much as she should. They'll be home tomorrow.
As a surprise, I went and bought something for Allie this morning.
A ring.................Yup, I'm going to make an honest woman of her.
SHE SAID YES
Life couldn't get any better.
