I have just purchased a nice 80 2.6 avant (Couldnt afford an RS2) good car with 177k and well serviced. However on the way home under hard acceleration I got white smoke. I assume head gasket but oil is okay and water fine. Car is not overheating, maybe it's wishfull thinking but is it possible crankase breather etc.
Help please!

is it definitely smoke and not just simple steam? these cars do seem to make a lot of steam when it is cold. perfectly normal. but if it smoke then time to start looking!

i had a few years ago now the same car, and that seemed to steam or condensate very easily, also had a 20v cq that steamed as well especially round town.

If it's white it points to condensation water etc. But with the recent weather shouldnt be happening much Maybe cos its the 2.6
You do get very scary amounts of steamy smoke at times but thats all it is just steam. Its never a bad thing to have a clean of breather pipes etc though.
