Finally managed to take the S2 for a short test bool round the block - first proper drive since the dizzy replacement and anciliary tinkering.
All was going well, took it easy down to the short run Harplerey, turned, started a run back and decided to floor it to see how she fared on WOT and make sure I'd still had some oomph! .... a sudden sucking plop and the car starting bucking and cutting out! stalling, no power and wont drive! ...AAAAArgh not again!!
manages to coax her a little farther, will fire up but dies almost instantly. ah-ha! thinks I - I've run out of fuel! I know I didnt have much in when the dizzy went and Ive been letting her run standing to bleed the rad. So leggs it home, off in the beetle with a can to the petrol station. Zoom back - in goes about 5 ltrs and I confidently try the ignition - the same . Will only drive about a yard before cuting out - and I notice a little backfire too.
Finally, I think to pop the bonnet, dreading what I might find!
What I find, actually, and very quickly, is the problem! Some dunce hadnt tightened the jubillee clip at the intake pipe / throttle body joint. So as soon as I'd given her a bit of boost the pipe had popped straight off. Neat air straight into the throttle body - probably not the best idea if you want the damned car to actually drive!
So next time I'm am feeling all smug about a job well done I will remember this and the near heart attack I gave myself What a dope!!

I hate it when something like that happens after a major job, you always think the worst!
Glad to hear it was something simple anyway.
P.S. You can leave the corner in 15min when you've learned your lesson!

Yes indeed Owen! Feel more stupid cos I didn’t bother to pop the bonnet when I’d have seen the problem immediately, rather than charging off to get fuel!

Aw I hate that sinking feeling ya get when you think, oh what now, and the sudden feeling of panic as you look at everything but the problem, its almost as bad as the feeling you get when you find the problem and realise "what a *censored*!" LOL
That describes it pretty well actually! My first thought of corse was that the dizzy had gone again - although she did restart, she just cut out almost instantly! I was more concerned by the loud plopping noise I’d heard as soon as the turbo had spooled up on w.o.t.
I’ve just swapped the turbo hose from a badly fitting Samco replacement back to a repaired original. Though I might as well whilst I was making the new heat shield. Ironically, the main reason for swapping the hose was so that the aforementioned metal intake pipe could seat properly on the mounting bracket. This is attached to the return pipe from the breather system (the one that goes all the way round from the back of the block). To get this return pipe to fit into the really badly tooled Samco it was pulled right out of position. As a result it couldn’t bolt up to the intake pipe which consequently couldn’t be properly secured. I never liked the way it was a little loose.
So it was possible that something could’ve got sucked in there! Then racing through my mind was the prospect of being back to square one and trying to diagnose what the problem was this time!! Not the best half hour I’ve had recently!!

So, does it go like stink now then? All "happy as larry" ?
Yep, very happy lad – and still amazed its fixed! She’s flying at the mo!! Feels very smooth and torquey and that horrible rattling noise from the old dizzy gear (and I think play in the shaft) is gone. I’ve hopefully cured the intermittent stalling at junctions / speed bumps too, tho time will tell on that one!.
Engine bay is a lot cleaner now too – even been spraying up some replacement pearl wing bolts for the slam / lock panel region where they are all rusty, especially the ones for the headlights. Finally got round to using the 3 step mother of pearl spray set that I must’ve had in a drawer for 4 years and never used!!
Well at least I’m out of my corner – till the next time!
cheers guys
