Silly amounts of money on a 15 year old car? As if I'd do anything that stupid.
Well, to be fair I've already bought a three spoke steering wheel, replacement rear speakers (mine are missing), replacement amplified aerial (mine's knackered, even more so after I attempted the repair procedure posted on here), roof bars (for work), far too many cleaning products, and uprated headlamp bulbs.
That only leaves the rest of my wish list to acquire. Cambelt cover (missing), as original mats as I can find, inverter, extra lighter socket, approximately 4,000 dash bulbs, replacement front speakers (knackered), sort the alloys, decent mudflaps to feed my rubber fetish, replacement upper door trims (mine are chipping along the top edge, weird), new bonnet (mine's obviously not original to the car and very rusty), engine undertray, new passenger side headlight unit (silvered finish disappearing on mine), and maybe a few little bits of paint. Absolutely zero rust anywhere except the bonnet, but there are a few annoying little scratches and rub marks.
Oh, and a leather refurb kit.
And so on and so on! What the hell did we do before t'interweb appeared? Most important tool in the box I reckon.

I once had to work on my track rods off the car, you probably do not need to sepeate them from the carrier bracket, but you probably need to seperate the bracket from the rack end.
to do this position the steering so that you can access the top nuts looking down the side of the battery tray, need long extension(s) to get a socket on them. Then position steering so that the bolts themselves can be unscrewed from underneath.
I guess you shouldn't lube the rack, the seals are fussy about the correct Hyd mineral oil being used, smearing grease/oil on the rack could be detrimental, and the wiper seal will scrape it off first time the rack moves through it's range anyway?
You may find that Passats/golfs with the 2E engine also use the same TPS?
Good luck with it!

Hi Greg,
I came across your thread regarding having the steering rack gaitor split on your audi.
Mine is a '93 convertable 2lt model and I have been told the rack has to come off! Is this true do you know?
Scotty i'v read your describtion.
Is it the same procedure do you know? When I look down to left of the battery tray I can see two bolts that attact to the shaft which has the gaitor on it - is it these two bolts that need to be lossened off ? If so does this give access to change the gaitor?
Thanks in anticipation

find another garage as they're trying to rip you off.
It will take about 30 mins or so to undo the bracket for the track rods and remove from the rack. With that out the way, the gaiter can be removed.
The gaiter is held on by a clip - I've seen cable ties used as a replacement

I was quoted 120.00 pounds for the job, paid 8 for the part yesterday and a mobile mechanic came and fitted it for a fraction of the original quote due to the info I got here !!!
