any tips on what type of cable to buy for a 1996 S6?
I have been looking on ebay and there are a variety of cables, and while I am at it can anyone point me towards the socket - steering column is as close i hace got so far ...

well that was the year of change. look under your bonnet, in the top left hand corner, open the fuse box cover, does it have a little black and a little white connector next to each other at the front of it? if so its a 2x2 not an obd. other then that steering column underneath i think would be a 16 pin obd/obdii socket.

Located in the fuse box under hood near firewall
You will need one of these (2x2 adapter):
and one of these (Vagcom cable):
Personally I would use a serial port if you have one and not USB.
I bought mine from ebay, 'alpha-bid'

Any reason for the serial over the usb? I have both but like usb as it seems to work when i plug things in without asking strange questions ...
Will go with your advice and get the serial adaptor anyway, and hopefully find no fault codes ... unlikely I know.
