I've really done it this time. Never one to shirk a challenge, I've got something to keep me busy over the next few months.
A 1992 90 quattro 20v sport is to be returned to a roadworthy condition. It's been idle for 2.5 years and needs some work. Current mileage is 207k.
The following items need addressed to get the car back on the road.
Flat battery
aux belts are almost perished
Faulty alarm
Old brake fluid
leaking radiators
rusty brakes front and rear
cracked sump
broken drivers seat
missing door cards
wheels and tyres are mismatched and illegal
I'll update this thread as I go along. Wish me luck as I think I'm going to need it |

Yes, this is Elliots old hack. It's been in his garage for the best part of 2 years.
Stripped the front end off and changed the oil. Turned the engine by hand - just to make sure it actually turned.
Alarm removed by an electrical specialist. New battery fitted and new plugs. Started it today. Idled perfectly on 2 year old fuel after an initial stuck throttle at 5000rpm.
had fun getting the right plugs. Looks like the Bosch F6DTC is no longer available. I've fitted F6LTCR which are a triple electrode replacement.
Will get it flat bedded to my house tomorrow and I'll be able to assess the car properly |

tonight, I removed both radiators. I'll upload pictures to the gallery later.
The aux rad has half the fins missing and the main rad is in a bad way - it appears that the bottom half has perished.
The main rad will get recored. Hope to receive an aux rad in the next few days.
Obtained several parts over the weekend (thanks Eric) - drivers seat, door cards, bomb, rear lights, drivers door mirror, drivers headlamp. |

I have front and rear bumper if you need?
Good luck with the re-furb. Nice to see another proper car being brought back to life .

Cheers Si, I'll remind you again in a few weeks.
Today was spent clearing the boot. Never seen so much sh1te. Old cheese, sausages, barbecue, lighter fluid, tongs, hp sauce, porn videos ; the list goes on.
Also changed the rear light cluster as it came with 80 rear lights. These lights are up for grabs if anyone wants them - drop me a pm. All I ask is that postage is covered. |

Fitted both radiators last night and changed the pas belt and fan belt. Hardest was probably the pas belt. The pump doesn't have much room between the pulley and the body for fitting the new belt. I'll post some pics tonight when I get home.
Short of a hose clip so couldn't fill up the system. That will get done tonight and I'll put the front end back on the car. |

Not quite as planned. When the car was first started, the radiator fan ran all the time. We pulled the relay to prevent this as the car was never going to reach operating temperature and we suspected possibly a duff relay.
Connected everything back up tonight and the fan starts as soon as the ignition is started. the radiator fan switch is showing a resistance of 3-7 ohms.
Can anyone advise what resistance I should be seeing on this thermoswitch ?
Of course this was only discovered after filling the system so it's empty again. |

I just metered my spare, it shows 'high resistance' which I guess it should. Would only be 'made' at high temp? |

dont know exact figure but a lot more then 3-7 ohms, more like thousands
you shouldn't need the fan much especially in scotland at this time of year, and with the thermostat shut...(warm up anyway) |

Fitted a spare I had in a spare radiator. problem solved. System is refilled and the fan comes on as expected and the afterrun also comes on.
Car is partially reassembled but I'm missing some bolts / screws. |

Saturday was spent rebuilding the front end of the car. Everything went back on ok although I was missing a couple of screws / bolts. I had some spares around although I'm missing one for the front transom which I've ordered.
Saturday evening and today was spent removing the carpet so that it can be defumigated. I'll try a steam cleaner and if that doesn't work I'll probably need a second hand one.
I was also lucky enough to find the locking wheel nut key which was a relief. |

I've spent the last few days trying to clean the carpet. The steam cleaner cleaned it quite well but didn't eliminate the smell completely although it's much better.
I bought some Maguiars pink carpet cleaner today. I've done the rear passenger footwell on one side and it's really made a difference as the smell from this section has gone. The problem is the instructions on the cleaner bottle. They tell you to apply liberally. I would not advise doing this - a small amount in each area is all that's needed. |

Would it be possible to fit a B4 /S2 front end onto this particular version of the type 89 or is only possible to uprate coupe's? The front cross member seems to differl...It's a question that has been really annoying me for a while! |

Fitting a B4 front end should be straightforward. The cross member varies based on the engine type.
Today saw the carpet and interior trim get refitted back in the car. Refitting the carpet was easier than removing it. Only took about 40 mins. The rest of the trim is also back on along with a drivers seat so I can move the car around now. I'm missing a few bits so it's not complete - mainly screws and bolts.
Under the dash on the passenger side I found two boxes and I don't know what they are.
Part numbers are 998 VAG 042 and 998 VAG 044. The 042 part is currently connected - the 044 is on my desk. I'll upload pics to the gallery later. Any ideas anyone ? |

What they look like Mike ? can't picture what they could be.
I'll wait for the piccies.
Let me know if you need any screws and bolts, I work amongst 1000's of different types.

Suspect it probably is an alarm of some sort - it certainly isn't doing much. The other other one may be though as it's still connected - just the cover is off.
Tonight I removed the drivers side wheels and replaced them with 2nd hand ones fitted with new Toyo tyres. Couldn't get Good Year F1 in the size required.
The front wheel bolts were really tight. My new 1 metre long 3/4" drive bar was struggling to undo them. Once off, it became obvious that the discs and pads are going in the bin. See here
I had hoped to keep the Red Dot discs as they were expensive when Elliot bought them but they're junk. Heavily scored and very corroded.
I used a M14x1.5 tap to clear the threads. New bolts are already ordered so I've fitted some spares from my old wrecked S2 temporarily. The bolts which I took off will be joining the discs. |

I'll need to slow down anyway - money is required for Chrimbo.
Undecided what to do once it's finished. Might keep it and sell the S2 |

Mike - Im looking to get some 17" wheels for my coupe and was thinking of goodyear F1 tyres as Ive heard they are pretty good. You mention you've put Toyo's on your car. Are they any good and how do they compare to F1's?
