'96 TDI AEL Manual Avant. 260k

I'm noticing that the engine appears a bit less smooth than it used to be. This is most noticeable at idle and just off idle, especially when returning to idle.

Vibration can be felt through the pedals. My feeling is that the engine is not actually faulty but that more of its normal vibration is being transmitted somehow. It is true that the gearbox mounts look a bit weary and the main engine mounts have had a good innings too.

My other concern is that the DMF may be getting tired, though there don't seem to be any unusual noises and the clutch works normally.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Nick

There's a 'snubber' on the front of the engine (IIRC) - Jonathan (Bladerunner - RIP) adjusted this on my AEL and mentioned that the engine & gearbox would move about excessively at idle if it was out of adjustment. It was a simple adjustable (rubber lined?) flange which could be adjusted up and down.

Sorry not to be more explicit in the description - we were doing the belts on my car outside in February at the time... Very Happy

Perhaps someone else could weigh in and describe this better?

Mike,

Thanks, I know the part you mean and the effect of it being incorrectly set (gear lever rises and falls as you come on and off the power - and pops your boost hoses off if bad). I don't think it is this though I will check.

Cheers

Slightly OT, but what are the electrical connectors on the AEL engine mounts for?

Vibration on idle is attenuated by electrically controlled hydraulic engine mounts - i.e. they get more compliant at idle, thus reducing vibration. Nicks symptoms suggest he may have an issue with these mounts. They're the main ones on each side of the engine as Andy mentioned above.

The bad news is they look bloomin expensive to replace (if you can find replacements at all)

Thanks. Yes, mine does that funny little unbalanced miss-fire like wobble when speeding up gently from idle too. Nothing drastic but it's a recent thing.

If it is the main mounts that have simply lost their adaptability, I can live with it. It isn't severe, just a change that I've noticed and wary of in case it's a warning of impending disaster.

I'll drop the under tray and have a proper look at all the engine/gearbox mounts, exhaust hanging arrangements etc. I know at least one of the gearbox mounts does look a bit distressed.

Finally got around to looking at the state of the mounts....

left side main engine mount has been leaking fluid (still when wiped)

Right side (impossible to photograph) also shows evidence of leakage, but less

Right side g/box mount looking weary

as is left side one

and exhaust mount

According to parts drawings there is another gearbox mount somewhere but I can't see it.......

What do you think? I'm betting that the hydraulic engine mounts are expensive......

In other news the left hand CV gaiter is just starting to leak grease and needs changing pronto and both discs are going rusty from the outer edge of the inner face of the disc. I don't know why they do this - the car is used every day and the outer face is perfect.

Cheers

Part numbers for the engine mounts are

LH : 4A0 199 381D
RH : 4A0 199 382D

If you have air conditioning you need 2x 382's.

I'm guessing that you'll need to be sitting down when they give you the price on these!!

Bit of a thread revival.....

Unsurprisingly my mounts have not improved. In fact I reckon the N/S one is probably nearly empty.

Struggling to come up with replacements of any kind without parting with vital body parts (mine!) to pay for them.

TPS came up with a new part number and quoted £ 520/pair + VAT. My local dealer seems to think they are NLA.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Nick

If bernie doesn't have any in his loft, you could try filling the leaky mounts with PU sealant (e.g. sikkaflex or tiger seal) just to pack them up a bit.

It probably won't damp out vibration in the way the hydraulic mount does, but might limit engine movement a bit, which could reduce the strain on the other mounts caused by engine movement.

Thanks Bernie,

Part no. is 4A0 199 382D x2 ('cause I have AC)

If all else fails then it looks like the non-hydraulics from 1.9TDI version (and possibly the 1.9TDI 80) will physically fit though they are not hydraulic

Ok, thanks. No great hurry.

Thanks for the ebay link also. Perhaps I'm too tight but £60 seems like quite alot for a used mount which is as least as old as the ones I have (mine is a late '96 car)......

Nick

Still looking. Vibration worse and strange graunching noises when manoeuvring.

Found this
https://www.drive2.ru/l/2219395/
which is interesting (may require translation unless you read Russian!) and gives a couple of part numbers...... 4AO 199 382F + adaptor cable 4A0 971 014A

Note that Birth P/No. 50633 also applies - but I can't find any of those either.....

I've been quoted £ 562 + VAT for the pair by TPS...... that is not going to happen!
