Looking through Audi Approved Used (A4 Avants) - I came across a couple of A4 3.0 quattros for £10k and £11k. Now bear in mind, Approved Used quattros in A4 avant guise are relatively rare unless you want to pay top dollar from main dealer. The next A4 quattro (2.0 TDI) I could find in the whole of the UK was £17k.

I'm not really looking to replace my reliable but (getting old) A4 avant. If I chanced upon a late B6 A4 1.9 TDI quattro avant - than that would be my preferred car.

Any views? Rolling Eyes

first one. 18K? in 7 years, never a good sign. Petrol automatic - 22 mpg if you're lucky plus too many horror stories on the tiptronic boxes.

Second one looks very nice, still the 3.0 TDI Quattro will be heavy on fuel compared to the 1.9 TDI. Still 11K for a nearly 5 year old car is still not cheap in my books.

Quite like the first one, but then I guess that's because it looks very similar to my B6 Avant.
Not a bad spec either, RNS-E, leather, cruise, rear parking sensors and sport trim.
Never understand why only the 1.8T sport has the more aesthetically pleasing black trim between the rear tailpipes though. It just looks wrong otherwise.

And ditto on the 1.9 TDi quattro Avant. I'd have had one in a heartbeat over the 1.8T I bought. Try and find one though. As rare as a straight politician.

Jase..

It was the low mileage that initially got my attention, then I saw it was petrol!
A life of short urban stop-start journeys. Not a fan of auto boxes, but other than that - it's a nice looking car.

I don't like the alloys, or the colour (my wife's A2 is Cobalt Blue aka Black)! I thought the price was okay now that I've looked at a few cars online - and it comes with 12 months Audi warranty. The attraction is that you can simply drive down there, pay and drive off. Any problems - then I can go to local Audi dealership. Did this with the A2 from Carlisle Audi. Very Happy

Really like the B6 styling. Quick look online and the only one I could find was a nice 50k example (2004) down south. Unfortunately it was £8,995 (private seller), and it didn't even have leather.

Like buses - once you start looking! Another 3.0 quattro - however a little closer to me. (2005) http://www.autostationa96.co.uk/ This isn't for me... I don't even want a 3.0 TDI quattro, but if you're looking - then cheers!

Assuming that the B6 1.9 TDI is next to impossible to source with low mileage, then what about a 2.0 TDI (170PS). What are the drawbacks? The 2.0 TDI oil-pump issue worries me - hence my reluctance to start looking at this particular model. These two are local to me (2007, 66k, Metallic Blue, S Line) http://www.newmacharmotors.co.uk/used-cars/audi-a4-2-0-tdi-quattro-170-s-line-5dr-newmachar-201147430891003
(2007, 40k, S Line in red) http://www.autostationa96.co.uk/

Jas - is that true that only the 1.8T's have the black bit in the rear lower valance? I've definitely seen TDi's with it in too, but as it's a sticker maybe it was retrofitted.

Spartacus - I 'think' that oil pump issue only affected 2005 models, the big worry with the 2.0 TDi 170 is injectors, although I think Audi are at long last starting to take some responsibility for this.

The second one is also on ebay and if it were another time of year I would be planning it!!! Mmmm that would be the ideal car for me. Anyone have any idea what the mpg are like on them, i.e. are the printed figures real? I run a URS6 at the minute so it is bound to be a lot less with similar (if not better) performance. The only thing that puts me off it at that price is the cloth interiour by the looks of it. Would expect leather at that price but still a lot of car for the money. Just noticed it is the 201bhp model, dam would need the 233 bhp Razz

I just like spending other people's money! Very Happy I've passed AutostationA96 a number of times heading to Ullapool or when I'm in Inverness through work. Never seem to have enough time to stop, but the garage seem to favour Audis, especially nice spec'd examples.

I'm in Alford.

Ha ha I see. I have never been there, but as I say might take a look at christmas while at the folks in Dingwall.

Alford, I see, my old A4 ended up down that way, Migvie which is not that far from you I don't think.

Ullapool, fantastic place!

Just asked Autostation a couple of questions about that car. Seems timing belt will need done. He says that it only needs done at 80,000 which may be right (seem to think my old A4 V6 was 75,000) however sure there was a time limit of around 7 years also which that will be close to. Mmmmm

No idea, know the 2.5 was definately a belt but know nothing about the 3.0, just assumed it would be the same

Belt is quite a big job and needs special tools I think, I did the belt and water pump on my old 2.6 80 but the A4 looks more hassle.

You realise by picking up the phone you've now started something! Laughing

If it's a belt, and at 69k... then 80k will be reached in less than a year (assuming you do average mileage and don't drive like Miss Daisy at the weekends.) I'd be looking to see if it can be done as part of the sale if you were serious, along with water-pump, thermostat and auxilliary belts.

Well email :>!!! Yea think it is worth a look but out of budget slightly for me. Belt (if it is one) is a bargining tool though as going by garage prices it is a big job . I am not the sort of guy that likes running these things to the maximum time either so with that miles and maybe even up age wise in any case I would have to get it done as soon as possible. If it were a chain am guessing it would be a much higher change time, although he did say 80,000 which as you say is not far away.

I'm 99% sure the 3.0TDi has a timing chain which is due at 180k..

If I'm wrong, then the maximum I'd run a high performance diesel timing belt to is 60k personally.

Yea I was lucky when I had my 2.5 as a mate did it for me and basically it was the cost of parts. Think it took him a while. Will try and find out on the belt/chain and thanks for the heads up on that. Agree also, no point in pushing it to the limit as if it goes wrong, then, well we all know!!

@ Spartacus

Have you made any advance with a replacement?? I have made my mind up that am going to go for an A4 3.0 TDI. I was going to go and see the one in Elgin and report back bu the guy has never got back to me, aksed him open hours and if he still has it. Mmmmm. I have also decided if I'm going to go for one of them it will be the 230 BHP model which are priced a bit higher. Not many about though, a couple in at TVS cars but slightly above budget, mmmmm.

I have also convinced the missus that if I buy a saloon that the second car can be an avant, i.e. an older one without as much need to look after the same. However both the 90 and S6 would then have to move on :<

Cars cars cars. Sometimes I wish I was the type of guy that walked into a lot and bought the first car the "right" colour!!

Still looking Wemyss. I may have to keep the 2.5 TDI another year. Sad

It's due a timing belt, water-pump, etc, in the summer. It's at 130k just now, so this will be the last major bill I'm paying for! Still average 45mpg which isn't bad for a V6. Some minor blemishes in the paint, but it's over 10 years old, so to be expected. Renewed all the suspension this year (except change the shocks), so not expecting any significant problems.

I really like the B6 shape, particularly the 1.9 TDI quattro avant. Only trouble is, by the time I come to buy, the mileage will be 100k at least for these models (to 2004). There was a 2004 example down south on below average mileage but it's sold now. Was still commanding a £9k price-tag.

I was also looking at the B7 2.0 TDI avant quattros (170). Nice example here in S Line spec. http://www.newmacharmotors.co.uk/used-cars/audi-a4-2-0-tdi-quattro-170-s-line-5dr-newmachar-201147430891003

Some folk are strange. In the current climate - they should be biting your hand off regards a potential sale?

Great news. Like a kid in a sweety shop! Laughing That's half the battle, as you can afford to selective, and basically wait until the right car, at the right price, in the right colour comes along. Had a look at the ones at TVS. That's a very good price. Particularly like the 2006 Akoya Silver. It's fully loaded.

Aye, and you'd end up driving a Ford Focus that you can never find in Tesco's carpark - because every other car is a bleed'n Focus or Mini Cooper.

Missed your question there James.
True, the TDi's do have it on some models, but what I meant was the petrol version. The TDi looks a bit different even with that black trim as it has no cutouts for the tailpipes.

I know what I mean in my head. Just no one else has a clue what I'm on about Laughing Laughing

Aye I am no stranger waiting for the right car. I made a mistake with the A4 2.5 I had, great car but wished it was Quattro from about the day after I bought it. I did a fair bit of hunting and hunting for the 90q 20V I had and the S6 I currently have.

Yep could never be the guy that buys the Focus and is happy. If you are going to spend time driving you have to enjoy it which means you have to in a car you like!!

No idea what is up with the guy in Elgin, maybe he does not have it anymore and can't be bothered getting back.

Keep an aye out at Culloden, they have a good turn over of good spec Audi's. I was a look the other day, 2 A4's 2.0 TDI, A6 2.7 TDI all non quattro though. They do have a trip/auto A6 3.0 TDI which was out at the time but would not have been interested with the auto box. Nice S6 in there too!

As an update I have postive lead from on here for a nice saloon. In fact, very nice car and ticks most of the boxes, just waiting for more info.

Have been looking about in the mean time. Anyone know this car:

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201152438217026/sort/priceasc/usedcars/transmission/manual/engine-size-cars/3l_to_3-9l/fuel-type/diesel/model/a4/make/audi/page/2/postcode/kw163bu/radius/1501?logcode=p

The lines around the back panels and boot look a bit wide to me, maybe just the photo angle but potentially repaired. Nice car though, specially if it is straight!

Getting closer I think so may have a 3.0 TDI by Easter!!

Did Autostation A96 ever get back to you? Their 3.0 TDI has less miles for similar price (although it's 2005), although there is some haggling to be done as it's over-priced in my opinion. The one on Autotrader looks very nice. Fully loaded too. An electric sunroof would be a bonus. Is it in Scotland?

Nope they never got back so not going to bother trying any further. It is the 203 BHP model as well which looking online seem to sell for less so I agree, it is over priced. He was not willing to knock much off without a trade in/cash sale when I initially contacted. It is maybe sold now though.

The other one is way down the road like most of them which does not bother me as long as you get plenty info to be 99% it is not a dog!

I don't know it, but the dealers phone number is < an hour from me. If you're serious about the car drop me a line and I can try and have a look for you.

Will examine the advert in more detail later.
