I've been looking for a 01-04 1.8t for months without much luck, are these hard to find usually ?.

Not especially I don't think. Although the quattro avant models are always the most desirable, I doubt anyone with a quattro has given much thought to selling over the last month or so either!

You're not asking much are you! An early B6. I've found a B6 quattro, in metallic black, 6-speed box, but it's the 1.9TDi (130bhp) which frankly is the best engine with low-end torque and great fuel consumption. Hell this little beauty is a steal at £7,295.
Has mint alloys, armrest, and only 91k on the clock.

Thanks for the heads up but I'm not keen on diesels, I understand it's a sought after model but after months of looking I'm starting to think I should have taken a chance on the car I found with nothing in the service book for the last 6 years .

Tell me you're joking? No service history for the last 6 years would be a huge gamble. It could have been a taxi in a previous life! Buying a used car is like waiting for a bus... nothing for ages, then two come along at once!
A well-documented fault with the 1.8T and something to be aware of is the oil pick-up pipe/strainer in the sump can become clogged with sludge starving the engine of oil and leading to major mechanical failure. Regular oil and filter changes are essential - hence the need for service history. If the car had been on a long-service schedule then it would be worth dropping the sump and fitting a new oil pump and strainer and putting it back onto regular 10k oil changes.

Not joking about the car with no documented history for 6 years, I had to take it on trust it had been serviced and at over 130k still on the original clutch/flywheel, turbo etc. I was close to buying it but the seller had a moody when I asked a couple of questions and decided not to sell it to me, it was a sport and at £3k worth a gamble I thought.

Nice work Spartacus
I think you need to be prepared to travel for the right car. And if I was buying a 1.8T I would drop the sump and replace the oil pick up, flush the engine and change the oil within the first week. I know of several who haven't, and the car has died.

Thanks again spartacus, what a pita that job seems to be, the last job I did on my old 2.6 Avant was changing the cambelt and waterpump, it seems Audi haven't made working on their cars any easier.

I know... enough to turn you towards an oil burner!

A local guy offered me his 03 A4 diesel cheap as he was leaving for Oz, the sensible choice but it just felt dull to me

re the major mechanical issues mentioned, my neighbour has a '54 1.8t and he's just had to have work done to the head :s he wasnae amused as it just highlighted the fact that he'd thought the guy was a bit dodgy that he bought it off of! dunno if this was related to the sump mentioned above.
It's cheap granted, but it looks like a pimp-mobile with the blacked out windows. Service history sounds vague too. Walk away would be my advice!
Thanks for the advice, I'm usually wary of city cars as the mileage doesn't tally with the hours the car has run due to them often crawling along in traffic, I don't want much do I .

This car has surfaced on auto trader again, I texted the seller but it seems they still don't want my money, I wonder if it has issues and that's why the seller didn't like the questions I asked, it looks fairly straight but what's a fair price for it ?.

I think you're right but against my better judgement I'd maybe still take a chance on the car for the right price, at sub £3k I'd have a grand or so in hand to spend on it if it turned out to be a shed, I'd have to send a mate round to buy it for me though

Well no joy yet, thought I'd found the right car on pistonheads but after finding out it only had a couple of weeks mot and politely asking the seller if they would put another one on he said "don't contact me again" . So rang a dealer on Autotrader about a car advertised with full history only to find it had proof of ONE service and nothing else, I think I'll buy a Beemer .

One of the things I like to do when buying used is if I find a car that I'm considering buying (done the initial look over, test drive, asked all the right questions etc) is ask for a look at the V5 and try and contact the previous owner if the car is at a dealer.
I managed to contact one previous owner of a Focus (this was before I moved over to the four rings, obviously) and said that I'm looking at your old car - just out of interest, how many miles did it have on the clock when you sold it? The previous owner said "154,000". Car advertised and showing 83000 on the clock.
A quick phone call can save you a lot of money... I always try and speak to previous owners if possible, or if that's not possible, ring up the dealers that have stamped the service book and ask them if they've seen the car, when it was, mileage etc.
I took nearly a year to source my current A4, and only bought it after all the checks I did came back to match the car as it was when I bought it, and I haven't regretted a moment of all that work and slog, and I looked at a lot of cars.

Yes I've done the things you mention in the past, I guess I've picked sellers with something to hide, it turns out the dealer selling the car on autotrader is operating from a car park in Luton, seemed well priced at £3250 but on reflection it's not for me.

Still haven't found one? Be prepared to travel once you've found one. They're sought-after, so won't be on forecourts long, especially mint examples with toys and leather, etc.
