Your right
Sodded off wifeys and the brother-in-laws car and cracked on with the 034 Highoutput Coil Conversion
Contents
Mounted the coil packs on the bracket, which I then fitted to the strut brace
Out with the old
Freedom
Removal of the old coil packs allow the cover to be fitted back in place
No longer need this with the new conversion
The studs that were left made great earthing points for the new harness
All the new connectors fitted to the original wiring - plug and def. play
Job done
Very, very happy with the results - totally transformed the car.
It has sorted out ignition, sparking, runs great, really smooth, also tick over has improved.
I have made a few vids (phone), just in the process of converting and uploading.
Def. worth the wait and money - I knew 034 had a few problems in sourcing the connectors.

The 3rd vid really shows how rapid this thing is
Sorry about the quality, holding the phone and steering with my right hand whilst changing gear with my left |

I am pleased that I have kept it Al
Yep it does sound good
On the cards for the future is the 3" turbo back exhaust system from Dahlbäck (I did have the funds for this but I used it to help purchase the Fabia vRS )
Also I have a spare ECU which will be on its way to TAP in America for a 340bhp upgrade - now that I have sorted out the electrical part of things (coil packs, knock sensors, lambda probe etc).
Then I'll stop there....
I have to fix the things that normally need replacing over time for an oldish car, shocks, springs, I have all the parts I need for the cambelt change (just need the time to fit it all), steering arms and all front bushes could do with replacing and the bumpers could do with a re-spray
Thats all I can think of for now but I'm sure theres more.....
I have two old camera tripods and some metal tubing downstairs in the cellar so I'm going to make a proper in car vid cam holder for some decent clips. |

Speaking of the 1.8T coilpack route, and 'll court controversy by saying this, but the 1.8T route is really a compromise that I'd not take. You have to run with the coilpack cover off or they'll fry themselves to death, also they are prone to failure anyway, chasing part number revisions and so on.
A couple of US based chaps are currently building a kit of standalone coils using them from a Monaro or Corvette. Not finished yet though.
When I replaced mine, I thought long and hard. Immediately ruled out the 1.8T's as I couldn't be arsed with the associated hassle, then ruled out the high output ones from 034 as after purchase and shipping, they weren't a great deal cheaper than 5 new OEM Beru coils from Marty with discount. As the 034 haven't yet been fitted to any car that has done well over 100k miles, I didn't know how long they'd last.
At least with the OEM ones they lasted 160k miles on my S2 before needing to be replaced, and even then it wasn't a failure of the coilpacks themselves, but the wiring to them degrading.
The only plus point I could see with the standalone versions, was that they got rid of the POS's.

I did think long and hard about this before I settled on the 034 Highoutput Coil Conversion
Straight away I ruled out the 1.8T conversion - like your reasons, I couldn't be dealing with the hassles or failures.
034 do a harness upgrade - but that didn't offer me enough
So....OEM or the ones I have now - 50/50 in the end.
I just wanted to try something a bit different
The install didn't go as per 034 instructions....the car they did it on was a left hooker also the brake servo is in a different place, also the fuel lines got in the way and I had to grind off some of the mounting bracket that holds the other sensors in place
But it really shifts now |

More you than me matey.
That job scares the willies out of me.
400 odd NM of torque to tighten up that crank bolt
When bro got his done earlier this year, the lads snapped THREE sockets trying to undo it . All three times they had two people hanging off a 6 foot extension bar
Hats off for you for having a go at that.
Mark, have a look here matey>>> LINKY
Sorry, couldn't resist |

Jas @ ebay link
That was with my phone
I do actually have a quite a smart dig. camera when I can be bothered to load it with the x4 AA batteries it needs (Fuji FinePix S5800)
I thought the link might have been some help on how to change the blasted belt
I've got the mother of all torque wrenches (3/4"), things taller than my daughter |

The 450 Nm on the crank bolt is common to all 5 cyl engines.
Having done them recently on a couple of mine, it's not that bad if you have the correct tools. |

Mike, I managed to get hold of Vag 2079 (along with a few others)
So 350nm instead of 450nm for when I get round to tightening the bugger up |

I take it that the crank bolt needs to be removed on these puppies then?
Just that when i did the cambelt change etc.. on my 80 a few months ago all i did was remove the damper (4 cap screws) and slide the belt off, never touched the pully, i assume by this that the 5 cylinder is different? When i had my S2 i never had to do the belt so i can't picture the difference.
Or should i have changed the crank pully when i changed the belt?
Need to do the Coupe's next week(ish) so may be interesting (16v) |

you need the crank bolt off to remove the vibration damper.
the crank pulley is held on to the vibration damper by 4 allen bolts.
You'll not get the timing belt off without removing the vibration damper |

I take it my 8v 80 was diferent then, the pully bolt need not be touched as when the 4 cap screws were removed the damper came off clearing the pully bolt.
The pully bolt on the 8v was a TX star shaped bolt, a '38' or '40' if i recall, as i never had a TX socket that big i breathed a sigh if relief when the damper cleared it. |

Poxy weather.......
Still raining
By the time I get round to doing this the car would've sailed away
Your right there Mike, with a few proper tools does make it a bit easier
All I've managed to do is remove the viscous fan (all of a 30 second job) before I got well and truly soaked - makes access to the bottom right cambelt cover bolt more accessable
Today would've been good to remove the bumper, hinge the AC rad out of the way and finally crack on with this
Oh to have a garage |

Äntligen!!
(as we say in Swedish)
Had a bit of a dry spell
Got the bumper off, changed the crankshaft sprocket, bolt, 4x allen bolts, water pump tensioner and cambelt
Timing marks lined up a treat, were still lined up after a few cranks of the engine so no problems there
