Sounds to me like top mounts. This is very common on Audi 80's. And shouldn't fail an mot inspection.

This looks cheep, maybe worth a look if your near, although probably cheep for a reason. And 1.9tdi is the best engine.

I would try to strip the mirror down and see what's wrong and order the the new parts needed or just take the car to Audi and tell them to fix it.
